Hey, thanks guys, I appreciate the comments! Not getting any painting done right now as usual but am instead trying to learn how to use the airbrush my gf got me for my birthday as well as painting all my christmas cards and such. also such picked up a bunch of new paper and frisket so I can try my brush out on some large 2d surfaces. Anyways, merry Christmas all! I'll hopefully have an update posted soon and will maybe post some of my airbrush experimentation work as well.

Hey, happy new year all! I just picked up an isle of blood starter set from my local gw as theres a few minis in there ive been dying to paint. First up I have a rat ogre and a swordmaster. Problem is I can't decide what colors to paint the swordmaster, thats where you come in! I'm hoping you'll all help me out. I have a couple of choices I'm looking at and am also open to other suggestions. My other decision is TMM or NMM. All of the below choices can be done in NMM or TMM. If you like the sound of one in particular let me know and let me know if you think it would be better in TMM or NMM!

Turqoise robes/silver armor/gold trim/red orange helmet plumes
Red robes/gold armor/red helmet plumes
Cold winter palette with dark silver armor and some sort of cold blueish grey turqoisey color robes and purple helmet plumes
Cream robes/red cloth trim and plumes/silver or gold armor

The list goes on but those are the sort of outlines im considering. Please let me know your opinions wether you like one of those or you can think of something totally different and awesome!

Cheers, Shakes

i for one will be watching what you do with the airbrush if its anything like your metallics it should be very very impressive.

as for your colour scheme i would stick with the Anne summers theme, you have an eye for that type of thing (cold winter palette would certainley give you a purple helmet) Lol so that gets my vote less garish too.

Hey all, so I started my first sword master. Not going how I was hoping even after repainting the helm twice but I decided to try and push through and get something done even if I'm not happy. Here is what I have so far, silver on helm and face inside helm is done. Purple plume and gold trim on helm are based. Sword is half done on blade. The quarters that are blended up are pretty much done, just some extreme highlights at the end. The other quarters are going to be shaded down to a very dark turquoise. Anyway, wante to share my small progress. Let me know what you think. S

Also wanted to add that the colors in the photo are tone wise accurate but slightly darker then in real life. The darkest part of the sword is hawk turquoise and the lightest part is close to pure space wolf grey.

The blade is technically well done. But has been done to death already and just doesnt fit the mini. Do the same effect with blueish metallics and it would look cool.

Can you be more specific? How do you feel it has been done to death and in what way does in not fit the mini? Mind you I don't disagree I just don't see what I can do to balance it out. I'm hoping as I block in the other colors and brighten the purple plume it will look more natural but I'll just have to see. Right now I think but am not certain that it looks bad because everything is so dark that the sword pops out and looks garish. I feel once the gems and cloth are done and the lower half is brightened up it will look better.

His eyes look really good Shakes, very neatly done :good: Silver on the helm may need a little more shading but until the gold & gem are put in it'll be hard to tell properly. Nice to see metallics being used rather than NMM.

I like the sword, very smooth. If straight Hawk Turquoise is the darkest colour on it then I'd suggest you try introducing a little black to the shade and white to the highlight. How far can you stretch the contrast (or is it depth? anyway, whatever the correct techinical term is).

Keep it up! Cheers, B.

Hey BPI, thanks for the comments. The sword is going to get a lot darker to increase the contrast. Currently the darkest color is hawk turquoise but I haven't started shading those quarters yet. Once I shade it I will finish it with space wolfs grey and some final white highlights. The side of the helm is a lot darker though I'm really not happy with it. Will post pics today. What I was trying to do was have the light be above but slightly forward and left of him, viewers right. You can see on the lower helm that is really bright, then hits that hard edge on the nose guard at the brightest point and then is darker on the right side of his face getting brighter as you move away. I was trying to make the hard edge cast a shadow and bump the contrast to make it obvious the light was to his left but it didn't really work so I kept he same effect but brightened it up some. The effect still isnt what I wanted but it's better then before. I'd like to change or redo it again but as I said I've already painted it twice, first time in nmm, and it's starting to build up texture and a lot of paint. You can't tell there's paint buildup as I keep it quite thin but if I do much more I'm afraid it will become obvious and start to look thick and ugly. When I post side pics you'll be able to see already the texture from to many coats of paint.

Double post again sorry :s do you think I should add black or a dark blue or green to shade the sword down. I haven't been able to decide which is why I hadn't yet done it lol.

Sword blade finished, not really sure what I think..... May one down the highlight I have running through the center of the blade so it's not so bright in the middle, let me know what you think.

Nice work Shakes. Blade is really neat. Personally the front of the helm looks a little flat at the moment but if I were you I would leave it as I think when all the other areas of the mini come together it'll bind the other detail areas together.

Good work so far.

So my sword master is currently on hold due to Vallejo Matt varnish making paint no longer stick to the model but I have tonight started a base for my Yarry model. Let me know what you think. Plan is to have an elevated path with sand and snow running through the boulders and onto the path.

Shame about the sword master shakes. This base is looking interesting. I imagine it will look a bit Japanese gardenish with those rounded boulders or are they getting carved? Either way I am sure it'll look brilliant with snow.

Thanks Will, not to sure how it's going to come out, not quite Japanese garden but maybe something similar. These will hopefully givea better idea!

Cool! I never realised how small that guy is. Boulders are bigger now I can see them alongside the mini. Excited to see it with some paint on it.

Cheers

The whole Yarry piece is looking excellent there. Simple elements but visually very strong. Seeing it as-is,unpainted makes me even more confident that it's a great mini. Hope we'll see some paint on that soon.
