Looking for some testers for a web app

Hi all,

I'm in the process of coding an HTML5 interactive web app "magazine/publication" and could do with some testers for it. Basically anybody who has access to some kind of computer device (laptop, tablet, etc) and an internet connection. I'm trying to get as many different combinations of platform and browser as humanly possible to try and identify any potential issues and rectify them.

The URL to this is: epub.pa-sy.com

It is very much "in development", but hopefully the bits I've done should work.

It comprises 3 "pages" that you should be able to navigate using the arrows, "swipe" and left/right cursors.

It should resize to comfortably fit on the screen. Anything much smaller than 1024 x 768 will likely have a left scroll bar. It's designed to work in landscape orientation and should display a message to that effect if you're viewing it as a portrait.

The first page should the world "Hello" rendered in the Nilland font face and have an ice cream slide onto it (this animation should play every time you view this page). If the text overflows (depending on screen size) you should be able to scroll through it. The red box should overlap the Rainforest Alliance logo and open up in a new screen when clicked.

The second page should have a Sweet Pea '12 advert fade in (this will only happen once). Clicking/tapping on the chocolate bar should popup a window.

The third (and last) page should have an embedded video on it.

And that's it!

I'm going to be working on a gallery slider tomorrow and need to work in some kind of preloader as it has a 750kb overhead - and that's only for 3 pages.

One issue I am aware of (though I may have fixed it) is that the video won't play on an iPad. Something in the script that makes the pages scroll appears to break any videos.

There is some limited compatibility with older browsers - IE8 technically works but some of the transparent elements won't render correctly. Also mobile phones currently aren't catered for - in time they'll get the text element from the

If you're able to check this, could you comment below with what device and browser(s) you've used and any problems you had. Equally any comments will be gratefully received - both positive and negative.

Thanks,

Pete

If I click the navigational buttons things seem to respond slightly jerkily, if thats the right phrase. The swipe feature seems to work well though, although when trying to swipe you need to click so that means interacting with any click able items on the page, so i ended up clicking links etc whilst trying to swipe across. The video worked best when it was maximized rather than the mini embedded version, which wouldn't want to load properly for me. Strange video though lol.

All the pop ups worked, although clicking the picture int he top left on the 2nd page irrc took me to the web page host directory, which I doubt is intentional.

Not sure if that helps at all!

All works fine, not exactly smooth transitions from one page to another, but everything works as stated.

Same here for the sweet pea advert, takes me to the host directory clicking on it.

Cheers

Everything worked fine. The page transitions did seem a bit less than smooth though.

First page opened, then all subsequent pages opened on top, including video.
no swipe, no response from play/pause button.

Tried second time only opens "Jelly baby"page and embeded video.

Hi all,

Thanks! I've just uploaded some changes which resolves the issue with the video and couple of other minor items. The Sweet Pea link now should open up to Google - I forgot I didn't have any files on my personal page :D I've increased the slide duration by 100ms in the hope that this will make it appear less jerky.

I'll code in an extra check to prevent links firing if you're about to do a swipe and check in Opera. It looks like it may be Opera specific as I can't emulate it in FF, Chrome or IE

I've also just noticed that on Chrome & IE there is an issue with the video controls :)

Mike
Thanks. That behaviour tells me that something in the initial script isn't liked by the WebOS browser. The tweak I've done for the iPad might actually fix it (although no promise). I'll investigate if I can get some kind of development environment to test :)

I think I've actually solved this as there was an issue that also appeared on Android (related to the orientation change). Code has been tweaked & updated so with luck works now :s

I've also discovered that mobile phones perform very poorly... Not that I was expecting it to work at on on a phone due to the massive overhead of a magazine!

Same specs as previous post.

Swipe function to change pages no longer works. using the arrow buttons jerkyness is worse than previous.

Everything else still works the same.

The ice cream didn't slide in, just displayed near the bottom of the magnum graphic between that and the text, however when I went back to the first page, it did drop in. Link to Rainforest worked.

The second page should have a Sweet Pea '12 advert fade in (this will only happen once). Clicking/tapping on the chocolate bar should popup a window.

Seemed to work well.

The third (and last) page should have an embedded video on it.

Also worked well. Although, very tiny and the "play/re-size bar" covered half the video.

Used my mobile, out of curiosity, BB 7.0. Was really hard to get the page to finish loading, after several attempts it loaded and the above results were attained using the default browser. I also tried to use OperaMini and while it seemed to load up right away, none of the navigation worked, it would just reload the first page. The fullscreen button was unresponsive on both BB browsers. I know it's not what you're looking for right now but for future reference.

On my laptop PC, Win7, using Chrome Version 23.0.1271.64 m, everything worked as intended.

Thanks,

Pete

G'luck with it.

Looks good for me. Ice cream dropped down on page 1, swiping with hands or using arrow keys gets me to next page. Clicking on the clicking phrase moved to to page 6. There was a black box on page 6 not sure if anything is suppose to be there.
Tapping on the chocolate bar made the golden ticket pop up. Clicking on The festival sent me to google. I would not have not to click on these items though if I was not pressing all over the page to see what may happen.
Oh clicking frog sent me to rainforest page.

That's really strange and may be peculiar to the Xoom as other ICS devices seem to be OK. I'll put in a back up to fall back to the old scroll mechanism. I'll have to see if I can get my hands on a Xoom to test the swipe prolem :s

Everything else still works the same.

Thanks :)

The black box should be an inline video... I do need to come up with some form of "highlight" so that you know that an element is clickable or 'interactive'. Possibly a pointing hand that flashes or similar and the area that can be clicked on.

Thanks :) And yes it does make you want to buy sweets - although it wasn't as bad as the demo ecommerce store I did the other week that I loaded with Krispy Kreme donuts...

Just to say, thanks for all the testing so far. I was away on holiday last week (really overdue on some time away), but now back, much calmer and cracking into the various fixes and improvements noted above and from other testers. Tablet devices are still a nightmare as there isn't much standardisation between platforms - and that includes the different major versions of Android too!
