Lord of Nurgle - first time with new GW paints

Hi all,
so, I have returned to painting after some time away only to find most of my paints had dried out beyong hope of saving. So I bought the new GW ultimate paint set (shame it isn't all the paints, no edge or liquid GS)

I have a big box full of minis but couldn't decide what to start with but after a visit to GW I found the plastic Lord of Nurgle, which I really like the look of. I'm not usually so keen on plastic but detail looked quite crisp and the mini has bags of character.

Colour scheme was interesting and I wanted to avoid the done-to-death greens but thought a normal flesh colour might look to healthy. In the end I spent some time with the new colours (at least mostly new names) to work things out. The skin is base coated daemonette hide, then layered up with mixes of bugmans glow, nurgling green and pallid wych flesh. So far there are a couple of glazes as well.

So here is the model after an hour or so.

Hints and tips are more than welcome, as are general comments. Looking at it this morning I can see these paints need more thinning than I had thought!

Looks promising, like the skin tones! So far not much to say... I will follow your WIP so keep motivated and continue posting... Really good try for your come back! Welcome back to painting... Be careful it is time consuming... ;)
Enjoy painting!

hanks all. I've almost finished the flesh now. I'll get a couple of glazes done and then post a photo. Liking how it is coming along.

Well, here is the latest. Happy with the flesh. My question is should I go with a bit more gore on the exposed parts? I wanted it to be more subtle than sticky red, so went with a base of skavenblight dinge, with nurgling and pallid flesh highlights, followed by a red glaze and a wash with some crimson and nightshade, to try to link back to the purple in the skin.
I'm just not sure if it is too subtle.

What do you think?

Nice transition from the purple to yellow, and overall I think the cartoon-style direction is perfect for this mini. I'm looking forward to seeing more progress.

Cheers. Here is more!

Still undecided about adding more red to the gore so moved on to the armour.
Base coat is incubi darkness, with ulthuan grey highlights followed by glazes of red, blue and green to add some smoothness and subtle variation.

Here's a little update. I added some red glazes and let a heavy wash settle and then added some gloss to the gore. Hopefully not to over the top but it helps sell the guts.

Moved on to some other ares now and overall pretty pleased. The photo makes the armour look more blue than it really is. It's had a few glazes with some green and purple in places and now looks quite emerald.

Any comments to help me improve?

Sure!

The skin could use a highlight in areas to bring it up to the same brightness as the bright area on the stomach: the top of the right shoulder, his right forearm, and some of the skyward-facing folds in his neck, to name a few. The green armor is beautiful, but a bit too clean compared to the great use of decay colors like purple and yellow/green found in the folds of skin. I think adding some rust effect to the holes in the armor, as well as generally "dirtying" the parts of the armor that contact the skin/ground would help tie the model together a bit.

That aside, I think this is already a top-class model.

sweet, im definetly buying another copy of this guy and paint it without hacking and slicing, the sculpt is awesome. youve done a great job me thinks, skinjob is great although a bit healthy, id put in some green or purple nuances in there, to make it more sick looking. but this works of course, great painting :good:

Can't say I blame you. It's such a nice figure.

Well, I've finished the painting on mine. Pretty happy with how this turned out. All I need to do now is figure out what kind of a base to make for him. I don't mind the detailed plastic base but I think he deserves something a little better.

What do you think? First outing with the new GW paints has taught me a lot. I need to thin them more than the old ones but there are some very nice colours and the glazes work well. I think I managed to capture some nice subtle hues with this.

(Sorry for the shallow depth of field on the rear shot)

Thumbs up :good: ... Really nicely done!
What's next? Which mini did you pick up for your next try?

Thanks!

I have a huge box full of GW stuff (I used to work in the GW studio - so have a load of minis lurking). I may choose an old favourite, maybe ezekial, or a warrior priest.
But then I have also ordered a few random figures as well, so not sure yet.
I've got an Ar-finiel from McVey studios but she is so small I might wait til I have more practice with these paints.

I also have a box of super rare items, which I was going to sell but now might paint up. A few forgeworld death marines, from before forgeworld existed. They were given out to staff and I ended up with a handful as some people didn't want them.

I also really like some eldar minis, so a farseer or warlock are likely too!

I'll base this guy up and then decide.

It seems that we will get some interesting WIP in the future!
Good luck with the basing of your nurgle!

I'm now torn between ezekial or ephrael stern, so I've cleaned them both up ready to paint. I'll undercoat them and then choose (unless something arrives in the post soon.)

What's best here? One all inclusive w.i.p thread for all minis, or a new thread for each?

Is it the polystone statue of Ephrael stern? I've never seen one painted up myself. The thread is really a matter of personal taste. Myself i prefer people to have one long thread. That way i don't have to sift though a ton of different threads to find the info I'm looking for.
