I've finally managed to get round to doing the testers for my FW Death Guard army. Unfortunately I could only find two plastic marines that I could use for doing the tests, so I had to put all of my experiments on them :)

These are fairly rough piece for a tabletop standard army, so I know that there is plenty of room for improvement - I've not even picked out any of the detailing as I'm trying to find the best armour colour.

So what armour colour do people think works the best?

What am I voting on? The grey or the bone?

Whichever one you think looks best for Death Guard. In all of the fluff they're described as having bare "Ceramite" armour - however there is no definitive description as to what colour that is. In a lot of Black Library artwork they have almost white armour but a lot of painted mini's are more bone/buff colour :)

Ceramite is the color that looks best as paint chips under the color your mawheens are.

on deathguard i would aim for very light grey/bone.

From what i have read in the past from different fluff sources "ceramite" is white and doesn't even look like metal. That is why when you see the pics they all look "white/bone". Most people paint it a dark metallic cause it looks better.

Thanks for all the votes :) As bizzare as it sounds, it's really interesting to see what people's opinion on what colour ceramite is in their mind. There is one train of thought that it's a ceramic based material others that it's more akin to Bakelite (thus could be coloured) and lots of middle ground too! Have a look on wikipedia for composite armour too - a whole new level of thinking!

I've found another marine I can use as a test so going to attempt a new variant over the weekend, and try to combine the various comments I've had from here and other people. In principal the biggest comment from everybody is that the plain black wash adds the most depth to the armour but a tiny amount of brown is needed to add a little colour.

The unpainted/crimson was the Dusk Raider scheme that was used before the legion were united with Mortarion, when they were reunited the colour scheme went to unpainted with green (to represent the sludge pools and slime of their home world), then once they were corrupted by nurgle it all went a bit messy ;) This army is right at the beginning of the Heresy so going for the unpainted/green variant :)

Just a quick update to say that I've been tweaking and experimenting on colours for a while and finally come up with the following that I think works OK. Since taking this, I have pushed the shadows a little deeper and done a few more details :)
