I love the implied movement you created with that ogre and the busted down door! It would otherwise feel like a very static mini. :curl-lip:

Thanks, Milosh, KruleBear, and Zab. My friends were just telling me some well known names from CMON were there, including Iguazza and Arsies. So now I'm even more jealous I didn't make it. I would have loved to see some of their work in person.

I heard about that open medal system when discussing ReaperCon, and I have to say it's a cool way to do things. Often times, using the normal system your work can get gold one time and not even place another time, just based on who else enters. With a merit based system, you don't have to worry if the pros show up, because it has no bearing on your entry.

Thanks, Skel.

Trystan, yeah, I really like that system. I don't have anything against the 1st, 2nd, 3rd approach a lot of the fantasy/sci-fi gaming shows use. But, considering how much work we all put into our projects it's nice to have your work judged on its own merit rather than against whatever amazing professional painter decides to show up. Of course these shows still have a bunch of one-off awards (best in show sci-fi/fantasy, best in show historical, and a number of best in specific sub-genres) so the really outstanding pieces do get special recognition as well. There are a number of groups around the US that started off as historical miniature groups (though now they have a mix of historical and fantasy/sci-fi), most of their shows use the open system. Since you're in the area, I'd recommend checking out the MMSI show just outside Chicago in Schaumburg. They have it every October (11-13th this year) and it's supposed to be one of the bigger shows in the US. I haven't had a chance to get out for it, but maybe next year. Here's a link with more info: http://www.mmsichicago.com/

Some other shows in the US:
Atlanta Show - every February
SCAHMS - LA in March
MFCA - Near Philadelpha each May
HMSEO - Tulsa in June (they had one in 2012, don't see any info on a 2013 show though)
NCMSS - Washington, DC each September (I'm part of this group)
Long Island Show - NY in November - I've been trying to get to this one for the past 2 years... 1st year had work come up, 2nd year it was hurricane Sandy... hopefully third try is the charm!
(plus shows like Games Day, Crystal Brush, ReaperCon, etc that people on this forum are probably aware of already)

These shows vary in size (some draw an international audience, others a national, and some just a regional one), but if you're near one go check it out. It doesn't matter what your skill level is, bring along some of your work and see what happens!

The HMSNEO show in Tulsa, OK this year is May 31st-June 1st, it is always the first Saturday in June. It would be awesome if some of you guys could make it. This is a smaller show but with a concentration of really great work from some top painters that have never been to CMON.

Thanks for the info, Milosh. At some point I'd like to make it there, hopefully in the next year or two.

Well, I was hoping someone would post pictures from the MFCA show. AJLaFleche on PlanetFigure just posted a link to all of his photos. There's a lot. There's a big grouping of the sci-fi/fantasy stuff on pages 10-13 and 26-28. The rest is a lot of historical, vehicles, and sci-fi/fantasy spread throughout. Tons of great work, definitely worth poking through.

And, if you really don't feel like looking through all those pictures, here are two scratch built scenes I thought give you an idea of the top notch work that's there.
Angel vs Demon
Beauty and the Beast
(don't know the actual titles, just my descriptions)

MMSI, huh? I looked at the page - I will have to check that out. It's not more than an hour from me.
As for those MFCA entries - holy $@@!.

And now for something completely different....

I've put my other projects on hold so I could work on a surprise gift for my fiancee (luckily she doesn't read this thread). She's a big hockey fan and back when we had just started dating she kept telling me I should paint a hockey player. I didn't know of anyone making a hockey figure (aside from plastic toys) so I said I couldn't. Not too long ago I randomly happened upon this figure from Ulrich Puchala Miniatures. Best of all it was a goalie, so I could paint it up as her favorite player.

The shirt is 95% finished and I'm almost done with the helmet. As you can see there's a lot of freehand work going into this one. In addition to the shirt, the gloves, pads, and hockey stick will all need to have writing on them. In case anyone follows hockey, the uniform is for the San Jose Sharks from the mid 90's (so it's not supposed to match their current look).

Here's a better view of the logo on the front of the shirt. I still need to add a few more details before it's finished.

Oh, and this past weekend my order from Forge World showed up. After I finish the goalie and wrap up the Scourge, I've got some lovely Death Korps of Krieg guys to work on. These might be my favorite figures from the whole 40K range. Something about their look is just so cool. Anyway, just a little preview of what's coming up.

Congratz, well deserved on the wins. Everything you touch with a brush turns out brilliant. The Hockey player is no exception and your fiancee will be thrilled.

You know what would be great? If all you guys that know about these shows would put them all together into one thread and ask the mods to make a sticky. Some of these i would love to go to.

Thanks all. I haven't had a massive freehand project since my Philip bust, so this has been fun. At least I say that now... he's only half way done.

Moetle - not a bad idea. I know a bunch, but there are still plenty I'm sure I don't know.

Well, Danny, Meredith and I have an understanding... I get to pick the baseball team we root for and she gets to pick the hockey team. :curl-lip:
