Hi all,

Some of you will have heard me moaning about old Alan Merret dropping my diorama at the judging table for Finalist Diorama at this years GD 2013 and then shelving it quicly to one side - well at least it was still in tact and here it is in tact thankfully - phew!

Feedback and critique welcomes. Should it have got a demon, finalist or should Alan have really committed and put it in the bin :)

The painting is very nice. Composition-wise something seems off. It may be just the pictures, but the whole scene looks a little off-kilter. Or maybe that's just the result of Mr. Merret's gentle ministrations...Still, I think it would definitely warrant a second look from the judges. Incidentally, those cobwebs are very good. How'd you do that, then? It doesn't look like the usual cotton fibre+varnish method. Don't suppose you'd care to share your secrets?

Maybe that background (walls, stairs etc.) would need a bit bolder contrast here and there, but I don't know... Perhaps more shading/darklining and adding dirt etc. However, this doesn't look bad or poorly executed by any means, because I can see that this work also took lots of time and effort. Specially that cobweb looks really nice and realistic, just to pick one of my favourite aspects in this case.

The competition must have been rather harsh with lots of really mastefully painted minis. It can sometimes be hard to pick those best 3 in each category.

Nice colour palette, however in regards to GD I think that may be your problem, they don't like the realistic palette it seems. More the cartoonish colours of the eavy metal style. I could be wrong but its been my experience and from what I have discussed with others on here.

Only other thing could be the base is a bit odd in terms of the round base leading up to the scene, if it was in diorama category, could it not have been on a more solid base?? Just curious.

But yeah I have found GD seems to be more of a popularity contest or something that catches the eye of late.

However I am not good enough for Euro Militaire or salute yet....:(

I love it, but I am a Dark Angels fan boy so, ya know. It seem GD doesn't like scenic bases form what I can see of this years entries. Nice use of an awful Asmodia sculpt BTW. I thought it very static and uninspired, but you put it to good use and made it convey the impression of accusation.

Hi guys. Thanks for the feedback. It's really helped my process of reflection these past few days.

Right it seems the cobwebs are the star of the show sooooo yes just as maxx stated. Kraklee over some cotton strands. Although that kraklee was annoying as hell. Looking for alternatives next time..

@meinjapan. Yes I think I needed to add another level rather than just the round base. Ty for your feedback.
@ Routaporsas. Totally man. I think this was the best represented category so a good feeling to make final. It was a small scene though so too much grime and I think the overall aspect would have been too dark.
@rosemodelart. Sigh I guess as a newish painter this was the hardest part of the competition for mee. I'm just starting to develop a style I think but it doesn't reconcile well with eavy metal I think. I saw other also more realistic styles that didn't place on the day.. Think like you I'll be trying other painting competitions soon.
@zab.my man! I'm a total da fanboy too so thanks
! it's nice to see someone got the accusation of the scene. Yes totally uninspiring model and once I learnt it was for finecast only I was like ok that's never gonna see the tabletop! But he fit my scene ok.. Now what to do with belial!!!!

Chin up though. Its a nice realistic palette, gives a very good mood of candlelight which is very 'grim dark'.

TBH I think the main issue is the round base with a column of skulls. If it was built into an inset box type affair with the bottom stp being on the 'ground' and a sort of cave with the stalactites you have etc that might have made the diff. I think the base just makes it look a bit odd, like you were trying to fit it into the rules of the Duel category but wanted more diorama??

Painting is fine though so don't try to fit into GW's requirements, the best stuff should get the demon 9/10 times, some odd stuff throws up now and then. I actually though the majority of demons this year were fair, more the first cut seemed to let a lot of odd decisions through (and no I don't mean that I didn't get one :p) lol

Belial: Um, paint him up and put little trickle of pee down his leg. Perfect for that pigeon toed stance ;)

For me the lighting in the scene seems overly disjointed. With no apparent light source in the scene itself I am looking for where the source is and i cant see it consitantly. To clarify, if we take the 4 grey pillar of skulls on the wall, the first has a high source, the second a mid light source, the third a high source that is angled downward right to left and the forth high. The servitor on the left is really hot, while the chaplin with surfaces in the exact same orientation has a completely different lighting effect. If you make me struggle to figure out the lighting I am already distracted before I even start to look at technique.

But it is still amazingly painted, just offering cc.

BOLLOCKS!

Probably the best way to develop is to stretch yourself. Don't think X,Y or Z is beyond me, sometimes you have to choose your target and take the shot!

Salute isn't as 'tough' as Euro-Militaire, but its open manufacturers and therefore you can push your boundaries choosing something to be Eye Catching. But as a First Past the Post competition it's still not 'easy'.

Euro-Militaire is Damn Tough..........BUT the quality is what you get to see and what makes you learn a lot and the judges are all previous winners and 100% approachable and friendly.
Yes it was like being thrown into the deep end of the pool without water wings for me, but I'm doing my damnest to swim with the big boys so getting any award is something.

For me the issue is that asmodai appears to be floating and you can see the pins under his feet. Although i would also agree with comments about the base and the lighting, that is me deliberately trying to find criticisms on what is a great atmospheric piece.

@ Wombat - thank you so much for your critique - that's exactly the kind of expert diagnosis I was after - Now that you've pointed out the light discrepancies I can totally see why that distracts from the elements I wanted the viewer to enjoy! Very well observed and thank you again for the wisdom. It will be different in my second interrogation scene!
@ You're right Dragonsreach - you gotta give it ago - Ill be heading Euro next year - it sounds a lot more civilised!
@Ozymandias - drat you noticed that! I just couldn't push him down further on his pins! Was so afraid of failcast breakage I just stopped pushing after a while - might take him off his pins and glue him in place as hell never be a gaming piece!

Thanks again all - its been a good learning. Ill post up my squad soon for C&C.

I thought I was the only one that noticed it. That is the only thing I see that is "wrong" with it. Other than that, the paint job is amazing and miles ahead of anything I could hope to accomplish.

Cheers for that, I spose I may also have been trying to create an excuse to not do the 9 hour train trip from Aberdeen to Euro hehe.

I am interested to go as I simply have no idea what categories are available, what stuff is entered (i.e. tanks, planes, boats, figures etc etc) and its much cheaper than games day (in that I wont spend all my money on FW!).

Its just a bit of a shame that I cant do both as too close together. I may do a few little things and see what it gets and take the good camera and just take ridiculous amounts of pics as a recce year :)

You wish. If it's not MDC or some other awesome mini co at the event, you will soon realise that once you step away from citadel products the overall prices go down but the quality and vast array of amazing must have sculpts sky rockets leaving you with far less money than ever. ~sigh~ Now if you'll excuse me there was a restock on some Maow minis I've been waiting for on the C'MON shop...:claply:
