I've been working on the base for the hoplite. Not too complicated, just a portion of a building and a stone texture for the ground. I painted a pattern on the wall and then weathered the base.

I still need to weather the figure, but I temporarily placed him on the base to see how everything looks together.

That is seriously impressive. You know I never really liked historical stuff before I saw it done right. I always thought, it boring that you have to follow a factual scheme and represent a predetermined heraldry, but you make it look like there is real creativity behind how you choose to go about that. I doubt I will ever achieve that standard of realism. He's on my HD screen and it looks like a still from a film - AND YOU AREN'T EVEN DONE YET!!! O_O

Thanks Zab and Demi. Very kind words. One of the reasons I like the ancient historical figures so much is the freedom they give you when it comes to painting. There are some historical eras where the lines between historical and fantasy are blurred. Doesn't take much to turn a historical knight into a fantasy one.
You know, I was thinking about doing some graffiti on the wall. I love the Rome series, just started rewatching the first season. I was definitely inspired by it as I started to plan the base. But I thought graffiti might be too much, didn't want the scene to be too crowded.

It's funny you mention creative freedom. I was reading something here where some body was talking about Space Marines as a good place to start for beginning painting. I thought to myself that Space Marines are maybe hardest because they tend to follow such a strict formula... I have do a historical figure in 2014!
Have you read any of the Marcus Didius Falco books by Lindsey Davis? Certainly not as gritty as HBO but they are pretty great.

Yeah, give some historical figures a try! Lots of good options. You can often find good deals on Pegaso or Andrea figures on eBay. Otherwise check out ColoradoMiniatures, their website has a huge range of companies and reasonable prices. Red Lancer is a great site too but since you're on the west coast Colorado is probably faster shipping.
Hmmmm... I hadn't heard of that book series but it looks interesting. I'll have to pick one up and check it out. Thanks for the tip!

Demi, I picked up the first book in the Falco series. I'm enjoying it so far. Thanks for tipping me off to them!
Okay, time for a bunch of pictures. I finished up the Hoplite. I went back in and added a few dings and scratches on the armor. Then took some pigments and finished up the weathering. Figure is up in the gallery:

With the hoplite finished I went back to the Knight of the Holy Sepulchre. I'm focusing on the figure for now... I'm still trying to decide on how I want to approach the horse. Almost to the point where I can add the rest of the cape. I also tweaked the banner a bit. I'm much happier with the cross pattern now. Still have the other side to do, the shading is just roughed in.

Really really great work on the hoplite. The only thing is he looks like he has a floating foot on the right foot. The knight is going to be a gorgeous figure when finished. Hopefully you can finish him by MFCA.Sure wish you were going to Atlanta, it is always such a fun show.

Oh man, you have really nailed that hoplite, I love the flying pig shield! you have done his armor so well. As Zab said I think you have inspired more than just him about historicals.
Are they pigments on the shield? I have the absal warrior coming and would like to do something like that but with a deep sea fish.

Canny, that abyssal warlord is a cool figure. It's been on my wish list for awhile but I haven't picked it up yet (too much to paint already!). When I paint a shield like this I start out brainstorming ideas on paper. Once I have something I like I trace the shield and practice drawing the design to scale. I don't worry about little details, just getting the general shape, proportions, and spacing. It can help to quarter the shield (draw a vertical and horizontal line so you can see where the exact center is) so when I transfer over the design I can put it in the same location. When I'm happy with what I have I go to the actual shield and sketch it on with a pencil. Again, details aren't important, just getting the basic shape. Using that as a guide I switch over to the brush and do a more precise outline with paint before I fill it in. I'll usually go back and forth several times with the design color and the background color to clean up my lines. When I finished the design I went back with bronze and painted some scratches. Then I came over the top with pigments to dirty it up. I used a couple shades of brown, dabbed it on and then wiped it off. Just be a bit random with it. That should stain the shield and make it look used. The last thing I did was take some tamiya clear red and dab it on. I only used a little, I didn't want this guy drenched in blood... but for the abyssal warlord you can have a lot of fun with it.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing for the horse. I'm just not sure how I want to approach painting the black. I'm going to have to experiment a bit first. I'm not nearly as confident with that as I am with white.
For the hoplite I don't have anything fixing the pigments. Since its a display piece I won't be handling the figure so I'm not concerned with it rubbing off.

Base coat chest nut brown, air brush black from the top and on the lower legs over that, then airbrush with gloss varnish take a few pictures, airbrush with matte varnish. Reference your photos and draw back in those highlights! Simple!
