Dear Mr. Sprockets,

I would love to know what colors you are using on the hydra head. Pardon me if it's already back in the WIPs some where. It seems reminiscent of your scourge wings and I really need to buy some new paints.

I would love to see a scifi pin-up painted in that scheme, or maybe a tyranid, or Kingdom Death monster.

You're quite right the colours on the hydra are very similar to those I used on the scourge wings. The main difference is an overall darker/reder palete and the use of purple.

I've broken down the colours used below.

1.Base colour: Calthan Brown

2.Dry Brush: Karak Stone
Wash: Baal Red

3.Wash: Baal Red & Seraphim Sepia
Stipple: Karak Stone & Wazdakka Red mix. Add Valejo Ivory for highlights
Shade: add Rhinox Hide to wash colour
There is a lot of going back and forward between the washes and stipple to build up the tonal/colour range.

4.Wash: Druchii Violet
Stipple (for markings): Druchii Violet/Wazdakka Red/Karak Stone

Wow, thanks for the great response! It's neat how much the violet stipples pop the red shadows and lining. I didn't notice them until you mentioned them. I really want to try something like this on the DV hellbrute I have sitting in the closet :)

I managed to get a little quality painting time last week and I've just about finished painting Jason.

I'm now focusing my energies on the base with the second Hydra's head and the Golden Fleece to paint as well as a number of tweaks and adjustments to the terrain. I've also started work on a label for the plinth. I'm looking to pull all the elements together so that I can get a feeling for the overall piece and make sure it works as a whole.

Damn mate you've managed to turn that pos mini into something special. I have officially given up on doing it; its just such a static wooden expressionless lump I just didn't have the skill to do anything with it. It just shows that with the right level of skill and patience you really can polish the proverbial turd! :)

Looking great! One of my favourite things about your bases is the interesting wood that you manage to find. It is so difficult to find interesting gnarly bits of wood that don't look out of scale when they are on the base yet you do it every time! I keep walking along from work or through the park and half the time I'm looking around for a "Sproket" piece of wood! Haven't found one yet:(

To tell the truth I've never found a really good piece of wood when I've been looking for one. My best finds have always come out of the blue!
I make a point of picking up any potential base material I spot and taking it home. It can take a while to see how something might work as a base and you need to be able to look at it from all angles and next to minis for some context. Most of my finds will end up being rejected.

I think that slightly weathered/rotten wood works the best it somehow seems more convincing in scale.

All right you got me! I have no defense. I was being completely straightforward and had meant no innuendo at all. Sometimes even the smuttiest of us all can leave a huge opening to be lampooned and I have been thoroughly shot down here.:crying:
