After looking all over the place and particularly Artur's and Camelson's work I decided to go for "artur" style of chipping but I could not pull it off so I added the cracks and that helped immensely.
I did paint the black lines first then filled them in with the brown then a light glaze of sand for the highlights. Only on the larger ones, 50-50 white - sand and for edges.
For the 3D I think the big thing is having a white line below the black line and black line around the whole chip. I also used a wet pallet and thinned my paint to coloured water and in the darker green area's I used a lighter green above the chip so I hoped it looked like the paint was lifting(more contrast to the dark brown). After that I went back and forth thinning the lines until I was happy. Hope that helps.
Thanks guys I'm totally excited about the comments, super happy with the results. I better get a consultant about weapon selection too, I have no idea. he was part of the Space wolf blister there are a few with generic parts. So space wolves will be in the future. Next are the Dwarfs or Dwarves if your a Tolkien fan.

Very helpful weathering/splitting/chipping/cracking tips, thank you. From what you say, it sound like building up white along the side of the crack that receives the light is the most important part. I never thought about how important it would be to do this with a very watered down glaze. In fact, I considered freehanding the white part of the crack almost just like the black part of the crack (dilution wise), a not-so-watered-down white line painted on in places along the dark line.
Here is an example of my doodling. In some places I put too much of the white on while I experimented and it doesn't look as good. Another thing I plan to do is make the cracks a dark brown black, but to go deeper black to make them look deeper in places. And lastly, it won't look as busy as this, I just wanted to practice as much as possible so I made far too many lines. Your comments would be helpful:

Yeah no foolin'. One short story about the battle between the emperor and horus 25+ years ago in white dwarf and I was hooked. I love the fluff. Especially the horus heresy so when the black library and forge world started in on that I just started throwing moneys at them. I might not play the game anymore or paint that many 40k related minis these days, but god I love that universe!!!

That's a good start, it's the only way to get better doodle, practise, experiment. not just with the application also with the paint consistency that's key too. My white is much the same consistency as the black, not super watery.
Options for starting out. You can thin your black lines with the grey stone colour (I still do it) as you get better with the consistency of paint you wont have to do it as much. Same with the white if you over do it use the grey or back to equalise it until your happy. the really watery paint is for adding a slightly lighter tone around the chip for more contrast I did this in the darker green areas.
I have just started reading the wiki's and stuff. Might look up the books that Demi was talking about. I love the ideas and look to the world, I do tend to lean more to LOTR fantasy style though.

Ahh I see. Tint the spot between the cracks with a glaze. Makes sense. What I will probably do is glaze it with a color one or two levels brighter from my pallet. So the darkest blue area would receive a mid tone glaze, and the light blue would receive a pure white glaze. Or something like this. Point is you did a great job and it is to be emulated and copied.

I can see the appeal with 40k stuff, but I'm with Canny where the Fantasy genre is more to my liking. Growing up I was obsessed with Forgotten Realms. And though I still think they have the best setting out there, with the most background, I'm into Warhammer Fantasy nowadays. It's like I sort of grew out of FR and WFB, with its medieval gothic setting is now more my cup if tea. I remember seeing Warhammer figures back in the day when I'd go to buy my Dungeons and Dragons stuff, and I just thought... Meh. But a couple years back I saw a Games Workshop and spent some time there while my wife went shopping nearby. I thought, wow I can picky my faction, build an army and make it my own? Too cool.
And then I found CMoN, and I no joke thought some of the minis were fake because of their quality. I thought they had to be 2d paintings. And that's when painting took over for me. I originally thought this community was like a lot of other painting communities Id been to in the past, which were GW focused. Hence my username-basically it means Priest of Khorne. I soon learned that people didn't come here for Warhammer.
Lol... Anyway I digress. What I really meant to focus on was Canny's badass weathering technique. Seriously, a deserving score on those Space Marines.

Did a bit o work on the bridge. Cork is a tough thing to stick milliput on to so will use something else or coat it in something.

Looking good Canny, when your doing the tentacles a good tip is make the basic shape first and let it set hard will do an SBS on the rest for you

Thanks WGS, on a side note Im looking forward to some "orc fury" from Scale Games /scale 75. Iguazzu did the box art.
Im going to go for some World of warcraft inspiration because this clip is awseome, the jungle misty feel is what I like with him at the top just before he jumps on to the captain.
Base wise that misty jungle style.
