Ah, here is a little sample of what I was thinking of:

You might want to put on your meat hat before you click the link, it's different.

Thickening Gel Medium is the product she uses. looks like it might be a neat effect for an amphibian.

EDIT: She uses Genesis Heat Set Oil Thickening Medium.

EDIT #2: She bakes it at 275ºF - might be a deal breaker.

I think the baking bit means it's a no go for my frog but it's an incredibly effective technique thanks for sharing the link!
My experiments with varnishes have not given great results so I'm still looking. The 'baby skin' (how creepy is that!) technique make me think I should try something similar with some Vallejo water effects. It's quite thick and might stipple on well. Possibly a dot of metalic colour mixed in would enhance the sheen - it's something to try.

Er might be being a bit stupid here but what about Vallejo Still Water? Not as thick as the water effects but should go on easy.

Liquitex or golden heavy gloss gel would be decent as well as a top layer to add texture that still dries clear.

Love the mouse head. You have caught some great character in the gobos face also.
Good choice of colour for his skin.

Well yes but he has been given an amazing gift of superlative talent and if we are quoting proverbs then

"From those to whom much is given, much is expected."

and also let us not forget

"AndyG is always bloody right; it says so right here page 1 of Gods commandments to the CMONers" ;)

Any more photos of this lovely piece?

Did you get the moisture on the frog sorted?
Not as yet! I'm being ultra cautious about what I slap over the painted frog. I've tried out a few different finished (I can feel a blog posting coming on about that) but nothing seems quite right. I'm beginning to think that less is more and the simpler the solution the better. I'm going to take a look at Humbrol satin varnish. I used to finish off all my minis with it in the 80s & 90s and three good coats gave a very nice soft sheen.
I've made a little more progress on painting Squarg. I'm really looking forward to painting some tribal tattoos on his arms but before I can do that I've had to focus my attention on his costume.

That's coming along very nicely! And yes I think you could be right some times the simplest solutions are the best at the end of the day. I mean its what the satin varnish is actually designed to do so why not eh?

I picked up a gel medium sampler from Dick Blick (Art supply place) and the satin medium body gel is pretty neat, you can build little peaks and ridges with it. You might be able to get small bumps maybe using someing to pound or blot it on... On the other hand it looks a lot like 4 coats of satin varnish at the end of the day. You can make some fun slime effects with the gloss stuff though.
