BloodFather's Axis of Chaos

Ok thanks. Do you (or anyone) thinks it's possible to just sort of shave off a bit here and there and reapply glossier snow? BTW- I used an entire pot of 'Ardcoat to accomplish what you see in the pic, so I did use quite a bit. Though the effect is probably ruined by all the powder. Does it look decent as is? Or am I a far way off?

Well if your planning on covering the cut away parts then yes it shouldnt be a problem. I use gloss varnish with baking soda and apply it real sloppy, like the attached.

Im not a fan of the snow looking to powdery but its all down to the effect you want to acheive :)

You could mix the powder with water fx and apply another thin layer on top of the snow to make it look wet or even apply the water fx over the powder so it soaks in. Could make it all worse though, test on a spare base first ;)

What I'd like to do is clean it up a bit. See ten ball's snow that sits on the rock at about shin level? It doesn't cover up the edge of the rock so that detail is still visible. Mine is more sloppily applied. And much more powdery. So I'll do my best to clean it up where I can. I'll shave away much of the snow, just leaving a thin layer of frozen mush, then I'll reapply a glossier version of the snow. The only real problem is that most of the snow crud that obscures detail, like the edge of rocks or other parts, can't be wiped away or anything. So it will still look kind of sloppy. Not unreal by any means, just not what I wanted.

Hopedully when I apply icicles it contributes to the effect. I've come too far to have this base be anything but excellent. I WILL redo the whole damn thing if I have to. Really isn't too much work.

I think it looks great. Just like a dusting of some nice cold powder in spring. I believe the technical term is "Dust on Crust". Zab, can you back me up here? Icicles and some gloss varnish to simulate run-off will seal the deal.

I agree with Demi. It looks pretty reasonable (maybe a little too much but you have what you have now). Maybe some more patchy gloss varnish or water effects to break up the powdery texture.

Something to think about is the way adding a really bright white to the base has changed your perception of the colours in the areas that are showing through (same goes for the mini, stick him on and see how he looks on there now). The contrast in the paint on the rocks will be less apparent. You may want to consider some careful glazes on those areas to deepen shadows, punch up highlights or both. You could also think about some subtle colour on the snow itself. Light blues for shadows where it is thick and maybe some very thin glazes of the colours used on the rocks and other parts of the base where it thins out/meets the areas not covered in snow.

I feel your pain blood. It doesn't look bad by any means, but I think there is a little to much snow on it. Wish I could give you some good advice to remove it but I got nothing.

Once again, my friends on CMON come through with some solid advice. Stew, your advice on color perception will be put to use. Zab, I won't be doing that with the water effects but you did give me the inspiration to try something with these ice effects I have. Ten and others who noticed there was an excess of powder, thanks. It was on there, but it wasn't on there too good, cuz I went home for an hour break and made the base look like this.

BEFORE AND AFTER

^^^^^Continued^^^^^

I actually wanted a blue tint for some parts of the snow, but after making some I decided against it. It was too much. I thought it'd look good because the mini is very saturated and it would help the snow blend with him. But I guess I want contrast here too. Need to always remind myself-contrast in ALL things. The colors on the rock have been muted from the snow. Therefore, I am going to go black with shadows, and reapply highlights that were muted from the washes I did previously. This should bring it back to life. And I will make a mud wash where snow meets dirt. Give this base some CPR.

A few few things to further "fix" the snow. I tested this out so I know it works. Take a toothbrush and get it damp, then lightly scrub areas where I want the snow remains to go away. Go to store, buy more gloss medium. Make more
slushy snow, reform some little snow ridges here and there. Will NOT let it get out of control. Then I'll give it all the lightest dusting. I'm from Ohio originally, so I know my snow as well as anyone.

I have some ice effect. I placed it on wax paper and left for 24 hours after forming icicles in it with a tooth pick. I wasn't too impressed. The icicles are not 3D enough. They are very flat. It may work to make a line of very close together, small icicles. It should also be very useful in attaching the icicles I make with lighter and pliers. But this ice effect dries to a clear rubber basically. There HAS to be some creative uses for this. Perhaps I will put a rusty shield halfway in the snow, the other half could get wiped down in ice effect so it looks frozen over. What happens if I pour some over the snow?

But we are almost done!!!!

The mods made one heck of a difference. Depending how you make the ice cycles, you may be able to get some blue tint into them.

Thanks all!

Put most of the icicles down and I must say, it's lookin pretty darn gud.

I do have a request/favor to ask of anyone that can help. In 1-3 days this baby will be ready for the gallery. However, I am unfamiliar with how to set up one of those vertical collage type pictures. All I have is my good old iPhone for pics ATM. I think it does a good job though (see last WIP pic of model on base). Is there someone willing to arrange these files for me and send it back to me via email so I can uffpload to the gallery? If you can just say so and I will PM you. Thx a milly.

Or if someone knows how to do this with just an iphone I would love to hear about it. Thanks again everyone for all of the support

Big ups to muh mayne Demihuman for the future help with the pics....

Here be the base with some icicles attached, and an icy patch on the rock. I am going to rearrange some of the the icicles and make some smaller. But it has indeed come a long way from the powdered mess of wintry hell.

Why thank you Can the Man. Just noticed how poor the lighting was on the pic. I take my pics outdoors and the conditions were less than adequate. Still a couple objects d'art to throw on there, then I'll mount the villain. Excited to almost be done. I feel like this mini and base were a community effort with all the awesome advice I received.

Godspeed

You done good there! Just a couple of tips icicles always point down never to the side or banana shaped also yes some of them need to be shortend. Got to say yet again this is v good, you've come a long way in a short time.
