Introduction. Wax on Wax off.

Hello all Captain Daniel San here!

Been a fan of this site for a while now and thought I'd finally stop lurking and get involved with the community. I'm 28 years old, live with my wife and 11 month year old daughter in Canterbury, Kent, UK. Used to paint from the age of about 8 to 15. Quit altogether when secondary school finished, went to college and then into the working world. Decided to get back into the 'game' when I realised I needed a hobby that I could have fun with in the time constraints I'm under. Being a full time supervisor in retail and a new dad left me with little time for myself, which I was cool with because I knew what I was getting into planning a baby. Then it hit me that I could get back into this. Keep my hobby in my desk at home and get painting again once the baby went to bed :)

I used to paint all sorts when I was younger, all GW mind you. Chaos, Eldar, Lizardmen. But my attention is now totally on 40k and Space Marines. Just because they seem like an easy starting point. I'll branch out once Iv'e painted a small force and then try something harder. I don't play the game I just like to paint.

I'm in awe of some of you already from viewing your respective galleries and I'll try my best to get involved and post a WIP thread as soon as I figure out this place and get a decent amount of images gathered. Got my pallet, my paints, my da vinci 3/0 and a hell of a lot of inspiration and cups of tea. So... See ya round :)

Welcome! I think you'll find a lot of us have a similar painting history, started when we were younger and then stopped only to come back to it more recently. A WIP thread is one of the best ways to get feedback and improve. Lots of helpful people on this site. Plus there's a decent sized UK contingent so you should feel right at home. =)

Thanks for the welcome that was quick...and appreciated!

When you're branching out, eventually, don't limit yourself to the GW universe. When you're in it for the painting and not the game itself, there's no reason to. There's so much great stuff out there and so much inspiration to be had from other sources.

Agree with ritual 100%. Best thing i ever did and quickest i ever improved was to step into the unknown. GW is the dealer who gets us hooked but there are better plastic crack dealers out there with some really good stuff. Also, I can stop anytime i want.

My favourite advice is in a way related to the advice of trying new brands.
I would recommend trying different scales and genres as well. The reason I'm here is that I felt a need of doing something other than my normally preferred scales. And now I'm back into minis, and I've relearned a lot of methods and techniques that I haven't done for years. People should try different styles and subjects now and then. You'll be surprised about how much you can learn and use in your regular stuff. And it's fun too!

Welcome! And congrats on being a dad! I am in the same boat. One thing I can add to to the advice here is to pick up some of the really old stuff you liked when you were a kid and paint that. Really rewarding.
