Love the skin tones mate, nice red glazing on his nose & cheeks. Just the right glaze for the stubble. :good:

Fantastic work. The quick guide on the face is wonderful and something I will look to try when I get a figure big enough, it would be tricky for my 28mm scale.

Love the placement of that highlight on his cheek. You caught the 1000 yard stare very well there.

I love my Reaper Pine Green! 09010. I like to shade it down with Nightshade purple but that might be a little too "Fantasy Fantastic" for this guy.

Thanks, guys. Milosh, well this cloth is no where near as complex as what you had to deal with on Lilith. Now that was some really nice work!

Demi, I was trying something similar. I started out using the Green Shadow and Green Liner. One had a super satin finish and then other got a bit chalky on me, so neither were any good. What I have here is their Grass Green mixed with Burgundy Wine to get a nice deep green color. Not the exact same colors but pretty close. I like the shade, but I think the issue is more my highlights. I'm taking the same approach I used on the Navy Guard figure with his dark blue and using grey to highlight. Unfortunately it's not working out quite the same. I'm not getting the contrast I want and the transitions aren't great. Maybe I need to use a lighter grey, maybe I need to mix in another intermediate shade of more Grass Green and less Burgundy Wine, maybe I should mix a little light or medium green into the grey. I'm going to have to experiment a bit. I may also do the yellow sections first. That way I've got something with highlighting and shading directly next to the green... might provide a more helpful reference to work with as I try to get my highlights and shadows to the right level.

hmm I have a couple of nice pots of Vallejo that might work for you. Light Sea Grey and Light Green Blue... Or alternately, if it's wool you might shade up to more of an olive to tan instead of a grey.

I've got my box of retired vallejo paints somewhere. I might have to poke through it for a dark green. I've also got all those new minitaire paints I've been meaning to try.

I wanted to avoid light greens for highlighting as it tends to shift the coat from a dark green to more of a medium green. At least that was my experience with blues on my polish lancer. I tried the grey highlight on the navy guard and finally got the look I wanted. But I hadn't thought about using a tan, I'll have to try that out too. I've got some pale greens from Reaper that might be worth trying, pale olive, moldy skin, etc.

So very true about the green. Unless you are dealing with a relatively large surface area, whenever I highlight a dark green with a lighter green it seems to transform the midtone to a tone too light. I think highlighting with yellow can help this.

Okay, here's the second (well, third) attempt at the green. As I said earlier, I tried working with Reaper's Green Shadow and Green Liner, but one was really satin and the other a bit chalky. So I switched to Grass Green and Burgundy Wine into a medium grey, that's the image on the left. So, to try something a little different I opened up some of my new badger minitaire paints and tried out their dark green color. On the right I've got the dark green mixed with reaper's burgundy wine (2 or 3 parts green to 1 part purple for the mid tone, more burgundy wine in the mix for the shadows) and mixed in a lighter grey, reaper's misty grey, to create the highlights. I haven't redone the right arm yet and still want to adjust a few things, but I'm much happier with the dynamics I'm getting and I feel like the green still has the dark look I want.

hmm looks pretty good... missing something... ooh what if you put some spiders on his coat??? Like big, but really subtle??

LOL

Just kidding. It looks great! What color are his cross belts belts going to be? More white?

Thanks!

Demi, interesting idea about the spiders. I will definitely take that into consideration. Yeah, the belts will be white although I'm planning to do more of a neutral white there. For his shirt I used bone shadow, weathered stone, and leather white. For the belts it will be a medium grey or dusky skin into misty grey and then pure white. Different material so slightly different white.

Ha, well I think the Napoleonic era has some really detailed and colorful uniforms to paint, so I've got quite a few figures from that end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century period. Even if you want to be historically accurate that era still gives you a lot of freedom in your color choices. Take the French Hussar, for example. You've got 14 different regiments each with their own color scheme to pick from. The dragoon isn't quite as flexible, still I could have gone with scarlet, crimson, pink, yellow or orange for the details. Plus the French Revolution and rise/fall of Napoleon provides some interesting historical background. So that and the ancients (Romans/Greeks) are probably the two historical periods I find most compelling. I've also got a random assortment of knights, pirates, and samurai somewhere in my pile of unpainted figures.

My dad's area of interest is the Civil War. But back when he painted he said he got bored of painting dark blue or grey over and over again. He started to paint mostly zouaves because at least that gave him some color variation.

Well, over the weekend I made some more progress on the Dragoon's uniform. I started by fixing a few stray lines on his pants and then finished off the rest of the green on his coat. I then moved onto the yellow. I went with more of a pale yellow as I liked the contrast of that with the dark green on his coat. The last section I wrapped up with the white straps/belts. It was slow going on these to try to get some subtle transitions.
