Skel hasn't got back to you yet? Shame on him for making us wait...

I know, there was something about an exploding computer... but I did finally hear back so I've got some pictures below. First I wanted to post about a few other things...

At the beginning of the month I posted about doing a paint-a-long with a Red Box Games figure. I was tempted to get it going quickly so people could enter their finished work in the RBG contest over at WAMP. Well, things have moved a little slow with RBG (mixed up communication issues) so I still haven't gotten any figures. I wanted to see them in person before I settled on which one to use and at this point the contest deadline is too close, not likely we'll get stuff done in time so no point in rushing things. I still want to do a paint-a-long but it sounds like it's better for a lot of people if we wait a little while before starting.

This past weekend I went up to San Jose for the Bay Area Open 2014. In addition to the gaming tournaments they held a painting competition and some seminars. They're doing something a little different with the painting competition. The group running it is trying to create a circuit of painting competitions culminating in their Dragonslayer competition which will pit winners from the different circuit events against each other for the Dragonslayer title. They've got events planned for OcGRE in Anaheim (Nov 21-23 if the show happens), Templecon in RI (Feb 6-9), Las Vegas Open (Feb 20-22), G&GCon in London (sometime in 2015), CaptainCon in MA (2015), and Califaux in Sacramento CA (2015). This is all still pretty new and I'm guessing they're looking for more conventions where they can sponsor competitions. The entries are judged using the open system, so there's not just a 1st, 2nd, 3rd. All entries are rated against a set standard and they hand out as many gold, silver, and bronze medals as are earned (not just one of each). They also pick an overall best in show that wins a special trophy (this will be unique to each event and fit into the dragonslayer theme), some other prizes (the BAO had a Badger airbrush and the complete set of minitaire paints), and entry into the culminating dragonslayer event. I think it's all an interesting idea, they just need publicity and people to go enter their work! So keep an eye on their website for more info

Oh, and the BAO was also Crystal Brush Qualifier. Part of the painting competition but the winner was chosen by the staff at Frontline Gaming (the people running the gaming tournament). They were kind enough to pick my Greek Hoplite so I was very happy! This time I'll be marking the CB on the calendar in big red letters with lots of stars around it. Barring some major tragedy I will be there!

This was my first time flying with my figures and I'm pleased to say they made it without any issues. It was a good test since I plan on flying to Chicago next year. I wasn't really sure how I was going to transport my guys but I ended up getting the half size case from Tablewar. Yes, they have a mini size designed to fit under the seat but most of my figures are too tall for their smallest size case. While too big to fit under the seat, the half case is within the carry-on dimensions so I decided to give it a try in the overhead compartment. If you want to do the same thing, be aware the case didn't fit right-side up. I had to turn it on it's side so all my figures were horizontal the entire trip! But they were bolted onto the shelf and the case kept them safe. I know some people use blu tack to hold their display figures in place... but I'd be very wary trying that if the case won't be right-side up.

Okay, enough other business. Here are the pictures of Olfo I promised. As you can see I went with a Mirkwood inspired piece

The spider came from Otherworld Miniatures (I found it after googling 'spider miniature') and I liked it a lot more than some of the super cartoony GW ones. It's got nice long legs and there's some flexibility in posing them so I could have him really crawling across the trees. The body is pinned to the tree so those legs aren't actually supporting him. Not the strongest joints so if I ever drop this figure or knock it over I'm pretty sure I'll have spider pieces everywhere. The figure is officially 'done' but I'm not sure, I might still work on it. I wanted Olfo to be the primary focus of the piece and everything else to just fade into the background/darkness. But having had a few days to stare at the finished piece I'm starting to think the spider is too dull. Maybe it needs more dramatic highlights and stronger contrast or some sort of texturing or something. What do you all think? I'm going to hold off on posting him to the gallery until I decide if I'm going to rework the piece some more.

Bailey that is an outstanding piece sir! However I do hate you a bit as you've entered it in the 5th dimension comp same as me! Oh well I'll go and play with my crayons while the big boys do the proper stuff.;)

Master work my friend. My critique would be to maybe tone down the awesome next time so my jaw has proper time to heal from contact with the floor. That is all.

Meph, you have my sincere apologies!
Krule, yeah, I'd like to meet with some of you local people (Trystan and Khonner too) as well as any other CMON peeps coming in for the show.
AndyG, well he's only going into one of the categories... and what if they hate spiders?

Thanks, Denis and Demi. Yeah, it was a shame you couldn't make it. There was a decent amount of downtime during the show, it would have been fun to hang out and chat. Too bad it fell on the same weekend as your move.

Hmmm... Napoleonic space indians... sounds like an interesting combination. I am trying to come up with some good projects for the CB competition. It might be a while before I top this one, though. In addition to the historical categories I'd like to put something into the large scale one. The competition there seems to be quite a bit stiffer than the historical ones, at least for the past two years, so I'm trying to find project that will give me a fighting chance. I've got a 75mm historical kit from Pegaso that's got lots of opportunity for freehand and some OSL too. It's probably the best option but right now the mini that's really captured my interest is the Jack in the Plucker figure. It just looks like it's going to be a joy to paint. I've started to assemble him and I'd like to do a few very minor conversions to match it even more closely with the original art from Brom. If I try to follow his paint scheme there's one other issue I'll need to address... but I've got one possible idea how to handle it.

In other news, the hobbit made it into the editor's choice list over at P&P. First time I've ever had a figure do that. Very cool!

Very cool recognition. Kind of the icing on top. I haven't seen the Plucker figure, but if it looks anything like Brom's art (such an enjoyable picture book btw) it would be cool done up with the same type of OSL as the hobbit.

It's a cool figure based on the cover art for the book, and Joaquin Palacios did a really nice job matching it to Brom's art (creepy background and all). The original version of the figure won Best of Show at the Monte San Savino Show 2013. It wasn't planned to be a kit but Terrible Kids Stuff used some sort of magic and got to do a limited release for the figure.

They made some minor simplifications to get it cast, so I'm trying to add those details back in. I've already put the nails/pins in the doll heads on the wall (for extra creepiness). I'd going to see if I can use some wire to add a few of the dangling hair strands and string ends. I'll also take some foil or wire to add the ribbon on the baton. Brom's art has some nice glowing effects so I'll see what I can do with the OSL on him.

There are a couple painted versions of the figure up in the CMON gallery. Just search for 'plucker' and you should find them.

I've started to put some paint on Jack. Really just the first pass at the face. Still need to do some glazes and details like the lips and hopefully freckles (though I'm not quite sure they will turn out at this scale). I'm not happy with the right side of his face, but the way I'm doing the lighting is making that more of a challenge.

I'm trying to follow the original artwork by Brom as best I can. So the left side of the face is more defined through highlighting than strong shadows. The contrast is a little bit more dramatic in person, although when I go in with some glazes that should help. In the original version the main figure is lit by a spotlight, so I'm going to skip the standard zenithal lighting and go with a light source above and to the left of the figure. Meanwhile there's a purple light coming from the other side, so I will try to include that too. Definitely going to be a difficult project!

I'm leaving the arms off for now. They're just held on by sticky tack in the photos. The joints are pretty well hidden and it's going to be a lot easier to paint those stripes without the left arm in the way and the hair without having to go around the sword.
