Looks great. You are doing very well with the subdued pallets. They can certainly be challenging, at least in cmon, because quite often people like those super brilliant and clean colors. Or the opposite, excessively weathered and worn. I challenge you to push the boundaries when using these neutral tones, though, by shading and highlighting with not so neutral compliments.

Thanks! And you're right about using more color--I end up working violets into the shadows for browns and gray, but I could be doing a lot more to up the vibrancy and interest of neutral colors. And I swear, neutrals aren't even really all that incredibly common for me, I just end up doing it for Wyrd minis a lot? I have Pandora and Lilith, too, both of whom could be opportunities for lush colors.

In the meantime, I'd really appreciate input on color. I think I like her coat--gray with a bit of purple--but an attempt to add a bit of blue to the shadows of the skirt ended up with a...blue skirt. She's gonna be a bounty hunter/adventurer, I don't want her TOO fancy, but maybe some pattern or texture or...something...would make it more interesting.

Huh! I actually rather like the crane idea.

Kinda bored with not-Rapsutina for the moment. Decided to fiddle with this:



Brainstorming what to do with her, I want to give her some kind of nonhuman skin pattern. Maybe deer-like markings?. Also started throwing together her base with scraps from what is now the Christmas Tin of Potential Basing Materials (plus some greenstuff lichen):



Stonehaven Miniatures is the maker of the troll lady above. The sculpt is resin, required minimal cleanup, and the details are crisp. Their stuff has this sorta Brian Froud-ish feel that's awesomely nostalgic and damn cute, in a lot of cases (the gnoooomes!). Also, they have a kickstarter for half-orcs, and I'm kinda all about half-orcs.

Phew. It looks a lot better after priming. Could still probably use some variation in height, though.

That's pretty awesome. I really like the pattern on that face. I wasn't so sure when said deer pattern lol, but it turned out epicly well! Should look great on that killer base as well.

For shading on the bounty hunter you could try a mix of purple and blue with tiny amount of green, just not too much to make it black. I'd weather the bejeezuz out of her, bounty hunters with patterns i'm not so sure. Filthy out on the hunt unwashed for weeks...hmmm. Troll is far too beautiful, i've had ex's more troll like than her, the detailing minds me of avatar, and i fancied the blue things in that too...no comment on airbrushes, swear word in ludite world

Aye, that face is gorgeous. Those deer freckles really embellish it.

Glad the face seems to be going okay! I guess it's less patterned after a deer and more inspired by the makeup of various faun-ladies I saw cosplaying at GenCon...

Dennis, I appreciate the advice on the bounty hunter. I actually just picked some pigments up so this seems as good a time as any to try 'em out. Also, yeh, this troll seems to be one of them species where the ladies are buxom and pretty and the dudes look likes this:

She'd be pretty rustic being a troll, wouldn't she? Anyhoo, license to go a lil' ott with patterns and texture, try out some cross hatching on the clothe and stippled armour... i'd like her kept pretty but her feet will be boggin' in that molten choco fudge base, she'll be a porker with no base in no time... lovely work to date

Thanks, DemiHuman, and I thought the same thing 'bout the Dark Crystal vibe! A lot of their stuff has that feel--big eyes, huge pointy ears, floofy hair. Really nostalgic for me.

Dennis, I definitely agree--the feet, robes, and end of her walking stick are going to be subjected to a good dirtying. I want to play up the mythological aspect of trolls--she might have a sweet face, but she also represents wilderness and old magic. It's really important, then, that she suits the base and feels like she belongs there. So I'm gonna try to do that!

(I keep thinking it'd be fun to paint her again with a different theme in mind, more rocky and rough-looking instead of forest-creature-y, like she's actually made out of earth...next time.)

Edit: it's so disappointing. The base doesn't taste like chocolate AT ALL.
