Bailey03's WIP

Should put him in some sort of defensive earthworks. Could be as simple as stakes coming out of the ground, or as ornate as a reinforced trench. The latter may be accomplished with a dirt mix and balsa wood, you'd think. Who does this dude fight for again ?

I must admit I'm getting more and more tempted to paint historical.

Yes, come to the dark side. Mwhahahaha! You've already taken the first step with your Achilles bust. Plus, when you do a medieval figure or an ancient the line between historical and fantasy can get pretty fuzzy. Mostly I just like working with the 54mm scale figures. At roughly twice the size of the 28's, you've got a lot more room to do detail work and have fun with them. Of course more and more companies are releasing fantasy and sci-fi figures in that scale, so there are other options out there.

Thanks, Gandalf.

Krule, hey, one of the big reasons I post WIP pictures is to get feedback. It's easy to be too close to your own project and not be able to look at it from another perspective. I was so wrapped up in the overall color change that I missed the look I was actually trying to achieve.

Dennis, sadly not. Deadline was Friday so he's a few days too late. Not a huge deal as I already entered my hobbit scene. But would have been nice to enter one more figure. Oh well.

BFK, good idea on the base... though I will probably keep it pretty simple. The plinth I've got for him isn't very big and, after a month on this project, I'm ready to move on to something new (or something old, still lots of unfinished figures!). The figure is a French Dragoon, so he's fighting for Napoleon.

Ha, you didn't like Golborak? You know, I remember being really happy with that Rackham figure at the time. If you want to see some really embarrassing work we can hop in our wayback machine and check out what I was doing almost 4 years ago. The one on the left is 75mm, ~50% larger than the other one! Ugh, it hurts to think about.

Seriously though, thank you for the sentiment. I have to give all the credit to sites like CMoN and attending shows (especially the MFCA). Just seeing what can be done with figure painting and the wealth of knowledge... well, it made quite a difference.

No I think he is saying he sold his soul to him ;)

You'd be surprised how many times I've been accused of this. Hmmmm... that's probably not a good thing.

Yup, that's a logarithmic scale of advancement right there... Me, after 25 years of painting, I once reached nineties "Eavy Metal quality but I have devolved into drybrushing...

The one on the left looks like Will Ferrell! That is an amazing progression over the course of just four years. Have you painted solidly the whole time?

Yeah, I spent about a decade of off and on painting, but for the last 4 or 5 years I've been working on figures pretty consistently. Of course as I improve I also end up taking a lot more time per figure. Back in 2010 I'd finish off a 54mm with a single solid weekend of painting. Now I'll spend a month or more on one.

I could use some advice. I've dusted off my crusader. The last update on the knight was back in February (although I did post some work on the horse in June). He's got a big white flowing cape and I wanted to do something with it to add a little more visual interest. I thought a simple black and white border on the cape would do the trick without deviating too far from what would be historically accurate. I've done the bottom of the cape and will continue the same pattern along the side and a little bit on the front. I keep going back and forth between really liking it and really disliking it. At this point I feel like I'm a bit too close for an objective opinion. So that's where I could use some advice. What do you all think? Is this working or is it not? Leave it as is, tweak it, or start over with something new?

He'll have a long shield slung over his shoulder, hence the dark shadow on the cape. Oh, and just a reminder that he'll be carrying a banner that also has a pattern to it. This part I'm very happy with, it's just the cape that's giving me a headache.

In other news, I just put the Dragoon up in the gallery. He should show up in the next round of approvals from the moderators. He's also up over at P&P.

1. That border looks incredibly well painted.
2. I think you need to add the 5 crosses to the to the cloak. If it were me, I would do it right in the corner above the border. There is enough flat cape there that it wouldn't be too hard. I would do it the same size as the crosses on the banner.

It almost looks embossed on the cape which is cool. I would not run it up the side as I think it would distract from the finer (and cooler) pattern on the banner. I am 50/50 on including it along the bottom, but would probably leave it on if you keep it subdued as it is now.
