Mega's menagerie of miniature madness

prehistoric, eh, the monster have greater tech than the human ;) seriously sweet job. hope you make it to euro and good luck there with everything! :)

Um...yeah dude. Everyone knows that cavemen had to deal with the rocket technology of the dinosaurs. You'd live in a cave too if pterodactyls were dropping laser guided 2000 pound bombs on you.

Euro seems like a long time ago now and time waits for no man, hence I've started my next paint job - 1842 Afghan Tribesman. So far it's sketched in with the base colours (and a single highlight on the skin that I'm not 100% happy with yet).

Since Marta asked on FB the blues are just - GW Alaitoc Blue (wtf is that name?), GW Calgar Blue and GW Kommando Khaki.

As someone who has been there, I can tell you that 1842 Afghan Tribesman is exactly the same as 2012 Afghan Tribesman. His dress would indicate, to me at least, that he is not a Pashtun. Possibly an Uzbek.

With his waist purse, very often Afghans decorate their accessories with a veritable rainbow of colors. For examples, look at some of their semi-trucks. But I might treat the studs on it as multi colored beads.

That was running through my mind, " what has changed since 1842?" The weapons?

Yeah, the weapons, and Saoudi-oil-money-sponsored religious extremism, intruduced in the '80's by the Americans. Afghanistan was one of the most progressive Islamic countries in the world, just like Iran, Lebanon, etc...

So yes, the US and Eurpope gave lots of money for lots of oil to a bunch of tribal, right-winged religious extremists, first to get their oil, and then to go fight the soviets on their behalf and help those poor Aghanis. Trouble is that the Taliban decided to stay after they kicked out the Sovvies...

I don't want to get involved in politics here because, well, people don't come here for that. But I can't help but state that this narrative is an over simplified version of events that ignores many realities. First, I should start by pointing out that almost every single picture provided in the link is exclusively from Kabul, which hardly reflects the conditions of the South, at any time. Second, America can hardly be blamed for the extremism which flourished in the 80s and 90s. Sunni Wahhabism, while rooted in Saudi Arabia, was intentionally spread by the creation of thousands of Madrassas (schools) funded directly by the Pakistani ISI. The US hardly was determined to spread fundamentalist Islamic values, but instead focused it's efforts on training the insurgency to use guerrilla tactics to shoot down helicopters or use any means necessary to unseat Soviet control. A tactic which undoubtedly directly contributed to the fall of the USSR and a greater world peace. Finally, one begins to understand the preference of the US in dealing with autocratic regimes, like in Saudi Arabia, when we see the resulting alternative which may ( and has) taken it's place in the form of the Taliban, ISIS, Muslim Brotherhood, Hezbollah, Republican Guard of Iran, etc... )

Oh yes, my narrative was horribly over-simplified, I won't deny that. To simplify it even more, I do think that the CIA poked their stick into the wrong hornet's nest more than once in the old colonies, in the name of east vs west Cold War justifications (Congo is another good example). But the lion's share of the blame is with the European countires post WW1, when they started dismanteling their colonies, as well as arbitrarily carve up the remains of the Ottoman Empire. A lot of Africa's and the Middle Easts' issues can be traced back to having new borders drawn across geographic and ethnic boundaries that had existed since centuries, if not millennia, and then pulling out, leaving them to fend for themselves.
Of course, the full reality of history is infinitely more complex than this, but from time to time I wonder how historians of the future will look back on the 20th and 21st centuries and interpret the 'simplified' patterns which we see now in the centuries past.

Anyway, you're right, back to painting, this is a discussion more suited for a lazy couch or a cozy bar. :)
