Hey guys and gals. I've been painting miniatures for a little over a year and love learning new techniques! I recently decided to challenge myself with an all red army. Looking for help to take my painting to the next level. Any input would be appreciated, good or bad. I've also been working on my iphone photo skills - I'm still a novice in that area as well! Thank you!

welcome !

All looks good clean painting, excellent for an army. If you want to push yourself (which will slow down your army painting) I would suggest shading each indivdual panel on the ships (for red dark browns / purples)
also having multiple stage edge highlights building up to the final extreme one. All this will add contrast and make them more 3D but will be time consuming.

Very much depends on how close you want to get to display level. One thing is certain: As far as base coats go
of the mid tone, iot a starting point, this is as good as you can ask for. Great clean painting. I would shade with something like dark sea blue, but purple and brown are good too. Or you can layer on the shades (instead of glazing) and go a bit darker and darker red, like GW mephiston or Khorne red, before adding in your dark sea blue. Highlighting red can be a bit more tricky. You don't want to go too pink or orange. If you have a lighter red paint, start with that.

This is great advice, thank you! I have a lot of miniatures still left to paint to complete the Army so my plan was to finish most of them to this standard first and then go back later and use some techniques that are suggested on here to really spruce up the ones that I want to stand out. There are a couple of models, such as a Farseer on a bike, that I use often that I want to spend the extra time on now in order to make them be more of a display quality piece. With that being said, do you have any suggestions or links to specific tutorials that could help with the blending/layering?

Thanks for the positive feedback and the suggestions, and for broadening on ten ball's post! I use the Vallejo line for my paints mostly. I started with Italian Red for the base coat and then added some slight shading using Fire Red and highlights using a mixture of orange/yellow. The wave serpent was the first model I tried this technique on and it was almost too defined for my liking so I toned it down a bit on the other two. Using dark sea blue, purple or brown sounds like a great idea for the shading and really will make the model stand out! I'll try all three and find which one I like best. Do you have any pictures of painted models that are samples of this?

I wish more people would paint their armies to that standard. For one year that is a damn fine level to be at :)

Thank you so much for the positive feedback! It makes me feel like I'm actually doing something right lol. I checked out your recent pieces and they look fantastic! Those space marines and striking scorpions are brilliant!! Where/how did you learn those techniques? From the OSL you used, to the weathering/battle damage and detailed highlighting that truly is the next level that I want to be at.

Thanks! I'll be rolling out step by step posts on my blog on how I did each part as we get closer to the NOVA Open.

Just finished another project with trying to use some of your suggestions from the thread. I used a darker red/brown mix for the shadows/weathering. Had a real tough time with this model because the paint was peeling off of the resin unfortunately but overall I like how it turned out. Will be doing some touch up but tired of painting for the night.

Colour peeling off from that model is something I remember, even after slightly sanding it. Some small edge-highlights won't be bad and I'm not sure I would have shadowed down rims that much. It looks better than your old models though overall.
Btw, what happened to the tips of the "wings" at the very front?

Thanks. I'll work on some edge highlighting when I do my touch ups. Not sure I know what you're referring to when you say "what happened to the tips of the "wings" at the very front?". Can you be more specific?

Looks like you are going to have a great looking army. Might have to drive down to the NOVA open to see it. (and everything else there)

Thanks for the compliment. Unfortunately I live in Southern California so I won't be at the NOVA open.

Dire Avenger test paint job completed last night. I think I like it! Planning on painting all of them to this standard. Any advice would be appreciated.
