bgcdazzler's first ever mini WIP (a confusion of cockups and learnings)

i think a bit from the box is usually a safe bet, with GW kits you normally get at least a few spare bits with each one and orks have that sort of ramshackle look for their stuff which makes it a bit easier getting away with gluing random bits on. option 2 from above looks good to me, the spearhead option looks ok too but i think is a little too big

Hey! Coming over here to comment a bit ;)

I think the spearhead is nice but as Sicks pointed it's a bit too big. The "stitches" on the flag are a bit to heavy too... but hey! it's ork sewed so you can't expect a seamless work xD

The basecoat on the flag looks like a little bit thick, too thick in fact from my point of view, but your greenstuff modelling skills on it are pretty good!

I like the colour you have given to your ork. It's your approach and if you want to paint a purple or even a pink ork then you are free to do so. to hell with gw purists (no offence intended) you must have fun ^^

Thanks Sicks, Maenas, that's a huge help.

A purple ork? Hmm, that could be interesting...

Marnas, I think you're right about both the base coat and stitching. In fact I think the whole model is a bit more 'blobby' than I'm happy with; Something I'll try to correct for the next one. Definitely will give TMM or NMM a try (gulp).

I'm going to whittle down the spearhead and see if it works better, but no doubt I'll cock it up and end up with the bit from the box. Now time to try some (really rudimentary) freehand on the flag and see how it turns out.

Wish me luck!

Thanks Kretcher: that means a lot coming from you – your orks are excellent.

Okay, so a few updates. I've whittled down the spearhead and I think it looks okay now with a 'cuff' around the base (it'll have to be okay, seeing as the GW piece has pinged off into the rug somewhere, never to return...).

I've had a crack at some freehand: a red handprint and star on the front (something like the Red Hand Orks, or something?). It looks... so-so. And I put a 'down' arrow on the back: I thought it would be funny that some of the more stupid orks following behind would need the red arrow pointer to tell them who to follow into battle.

I'm weird.

Onto mistake number 267 (or so): the stitching. Not only did Maenas call it right that they're too heavy... the thread is also very furry! Hard to paint neatly. I guess I could have waxed the thread before I used it (more planning, less haste, as usual). But I think next time I'll use rolled-out green stuff to simulate the thread. Ah well. That's what has been so great about this: I feel like I've learned so much from my first ever miniature – and I'm still smiling!

Anyway, here are some pics of where I've got him.

Front view: the Red Hand

On this one you can see where I've added the OSL from the gun to the trousers. Also amended the red eye (it's supposed to be white with a bit of red/orange glow on it) and the horrid stripy pipe.

Back view: the red arrow. I also added some stripes and a number 8 to the yellow (why 8? Um... because it's the easiest number to paint other than zero, I discovered!)

Another back view:

Barring sticking the arm on and some touching up of the paint here and there (and everywhere), I'm going to call him 'finished' pretty soon. And then... I've got some gravel, some wood, some green stuff... time to start the base!

Thanks Skelettet. Having now tried it, I am in awe of your freehand banners. They're unbelievable. I appreciate your kind words.

Absolutely love the idea with the arrow! It's beautifully "Orky". :)

You're doing splendidly for your first mini! "Go big or go home" is a great way to learn stuff as I've figured out - I'm also new to the hobby. Keen to see what you've got in store for us next! :bulgy-eyes:

Thanks ArchArad: I'm having a bit of a love/hate relationship with the arrow at the moment. On the one hand I'm quite pleased with it, but on the other... Basing.

I'm wondering if I should paint a few 'followers' and do a big base/diorama with a bunch of Orks, or just base him alone and put him aside? I've really enjoyed his company but I'm eager to get on with a new one....

You could put him to one side unbased and work on the next one before you make up your mind about a diorama. Alternatively you could base him to get a "feel" for basing and then post him in your gallery for feedback. Depends what you're looking to accomplish for yourself hobby-wise.

But don't let him stop you moving on - you've got good forward momentum going. I say ride the wave of enthusiasm!

A great idea, thank you! I guess I'm caught up in the 'ooh, nearly finished my first' euphoria and in danger of rushing the finish.

Incidentally, I love the start on your nurgle Lord. I didn't realise they were a CMON tradition, I might have to get one of those.

I like the start you've made on the bust too - you're braver than I for tackling that. I'd like to do a bust sometime in the future (but maybe a different one: as lovely as it is it would get annoying having my kids tell everybody that Daddy's 'busy painting boobies at the moment').

Glad I could be of assistance. :)

I assigned the term "tradition" because a lot of the galleries I've seen seem to have one lurking. Glad you like him and that you found my WIP - you're most welcome to stop by and comment or just join the general lunacy. I've found people really helpful and friendly.

Lol! That would probably be a bad idea. :) I've learnt so much painting her - going up in scale presents different challenges. There are some gorgeous busts to choose from so I'm sure you'll find one that won't scandalise your family. :p

Completely agreed!
You will find some things easier, its a lot easier to move the brush around, at the same time you get a very big surface so you need to control brush strokes and paint consistency a little more. Gradations or blendings get a lot easier because you have much more space to work with the colours also. So there are many things to experiment...

I would say... do what calls you more ^^

i always seem to be painting the ass of a figure whenever my lot have friends around, its like they have a 6th sense and always walk past when i'm painting somethings butt

ive only done the one larger scale mini but i enjoyed it, a different learning experience for sure but fun even if i still havent finished it

I totally honestly believe you when you say it is a coincidence. No, really. I do. :smirk:

I think that settles it: I'll have to try a bust sometime soon. In the meantime I'm putting together the next little Ork chappy. I'm half-tempted to go with a purple Ork as suggested before... but then they wouldn't work so well together. I'm also thinking some sort of plasma weapon might be cool - some blue OSL instead of red this time.

Pics to come soon (once I've left work and got home and had some dinner and actually done some painting, of course).

Okey-doke, lots done last night. But first: my first mini... now finished! (Sort of.)

He's a bit blobby, a bit rough, but he's mine. :)

Onto mini number 2!

Here's the one I'm doing, all ready for primer. He's got a big backpack and gun/straps, so I'm having to paint him in bits.

(EDIT: No idea why this pic is upside down, sorry.)

So I primered and got some basecoats done, like so:

An ass pic, for Sicks:

And some very preliminary shading on the head/leather arm.

2zssbr6.jpg

I'm thinking for this one a plasma-type weapon, so I can have a bit of blue plasma leaking out of the backpack, and spilling from the end of his weapon. Also gives me a chance to splash blue all over him – useful, because otherwise he's brown, brown, brown... with a dash of brown.

The goggles are going to be (hopefully) a sort of steampunk goldish look, not yellow.

One other thing - practice really does help! The base layers are (in my humble view) going on much more smoothly this time than on my first. Hopefully a sign that things are starting to gel...
