Thanks ten.
So so like many others I sat at the table with a vague sense of ennui - I couldn't summon the inspiration to paint Maulgy this weekend.
Instead I broke out the Fimo and decided I'd try to make a bust. Bit different to my first sculpting efforts as I actually sketched out my idea in rough first, and tried at least to make it a sensible scale (roughly 1:9).
I I tool quite a few pics for each step, so hopefully this shows the process.
1. The armature. About as basic as it gets.
2. An egg with a face on it - just mapping out the features.
3. Facial structure. Surprise surprise... It's an Orc.

the aim is to have an old veteran smiling slightly after another victory. Hoping at this stage to add some serious damage to him too.
4. Basic smushing (a technical term). Kudos to Digga, cocktail sticks are the business for sculpting. Thanks for the advice, man.
You can see on this side of the face where I've gouged some out of his face - he's going to have a big chunk of skin missing.
5. Rough facial expression.
6. Slightly smoother face. Oh yes - ears too.
7. Showing the damage on his face. The teeth are starting to take shape here.
8. Finished smoothing the face, more or less. For some reason I did the eyes last - the opposite of painting. Don't know why, but it was quite easy to fit it into the socket this way around.
9. And the finished damage.
10. Then the neck. He's supposed to be old, so no big muscular neck here. Instead I gave him a wrinkly wattle. Then it's into the oven to bake this bit before I break it...
11. After cooking and letting him cool down I started an undershirt to help stand him up.
12. The undershirt, with some stitching and wrinkles.
14. Then some basic armour shapes...
...and at this point I stopped, because it was past my bedtime.
Here he is this morning in his current unfinished state:
I can still see a few issues with him, and he needs his armour plus a hat or helmet, but for my 2nd sculpt I'm rather pleased with him. Cocktail sticks make it a lot easier to do details.
Normal Maulgy service will resume this week...
