First ever painting projectL Space Hulk 3rd ed.

I have seen minis. I have seen painted minis. I never thought it would be something I would get into but then a deal too good to turn down on a Space hulk 3rd ed. came up. So as of about a month ago now I have been bitten by the Mini painting bug.

Here are some photos of the first mini to get painted. Brother Zael the heavy flamer.

I made some obvious mistake with a heavy layer of primer and paint on his right leg that obliterated a crest detail but overall I am happy with my first crack at painting.

I welcome all tips and critiques and look forward to posting more pics of the next Blood Angels to get painted.

I made an album but didn't want to attach the images as I wasn't sure how to make them thumbnails.

Welcome to the hobby and to the forums. :)

Really good work on your first mini. Thinning your paint with some water will give you better control over it. It's one of the first pieces of advice that a friend gave me when I started out and it made such a difference.

Welcome to the forums. I have some partially painted Space hulk (v. 1) that have been staring at me from my paint desk since I moved into the house.

Yes I have started thinning the paints much more and being more conscious of watching for paint pooling. As I upload the newer Angels I hope to show all some improvement :)

A quick update on Zael. I have fixed the hand and made the eagle head gold. I have also touched up the golden wings with a brighter gold to highlight.
I also made the muzzle of the Heavy Flamer brass.

Your brush control is already improving. :good:

The edges between the white and black on his pauldron and knee are a bit shaky - but another coat or two of either colour with a careful eye should sort that out.

I'd consider making the wax on the purity seals a darker red - possibly by mixing in some dark brown or even using a shade over them. They fade away into the armour at the moment and while you don't want them to distract from the rest of the model, I think they need something to differentiate them. Some "squiggles" (a technical term :)) on the ribbons of the purity seals to suggest writing may also work.

But all of these are just suggestions. And from a novice painter.

Thanks Arch. I will touch up the black/white borders and see about hitting the purity seals to get them to stand out.

I just watched a video on making a wet palette and I am very excited to try that out.

Many people swear by wet palettes (I'm still working on using one more often) and fortunately they are pretty easy to make without having to break the bank. Just remember to pick up parchment paper rather than wax paper - it wicks water better. And paper towel rather than a sponge allows you to throw the whole bunch out when you need to without worrying about bugs/fungus growing in the sponge.

Yup constructed as per Tabletop Minions video. I always have parchment around for baking so I had all the parts in house.

Hehe, I know that feeling!
Have you got started with the wet palette yet? How do you find it? I swear by mine now. Will never go back!

Very good on thes first couple. Best advice I could give is try everything and see what works...in the meantime here are some articles I give all the newcomers to divulge them into their quickened learning curves .an assignment if you will. The first article is a show how in how to thin paints, how much and what different constituencies are used for.its on the"reaper website" -a toto rial called the craft-let it flow, the art of thinning paint!!
Land the second article is on the OZpainters site-and is called " mainly medieval-"THE STOP SIGN RULE!" This deals with how and where to place your highlights. Any questions you can reach me on my thread -"showing my newest works before I get into things!" Cheers and welcome aboard.
