Star wars Force Awakens.

Watched it with my two boys and all their friends: they all thought it was the best ever, so that counts for something. I can see both sides: there was no way of pleasing everyone but the safest course was to emulate the tone of the originals. As a result it was a real nostalgia fest; almost too much in places, but then I'm no diehard fan.

The he only disappointment for me was that it was too safe. 40 years after the republic beat the empire, a new empire suddenly challenges the republic again? Good grief. They could at least have had the republic becoming bloated and corrupt after too many decades in power, and the plucky resistance a group that breaks away and goes looking for Luke to restore goodness to the republic. Something like that.

Maybe it is close to that, since we know next to nothing.

Yeah, as Marjedi said, we don't know much about what has been happening in this story since Return of the Jedi. I got the impression that the Resistance and the First Order have been fighting with each other for quite some time. I mean, there's certainly evidence of that on Jakku. The relationship between the new republic and the resistance was a bit confusing to me. They both seem opposed to the first order, but they're clearly separate entities.

I imagine some of the other material (books, comic books, etc) that they release in the coming months/year will fill in some of those details. They couldn't give away too much information in order to keep certain movie plot points secret. But, now that the film is out, that should allow them to provide more info. In the end, the movies should stand on their own. You shouldn't need to read the books and all the other stuff to enjoy and understand them. But, for those of us who are fans of the story and want to know more, they should be helpful.

Right just got back from seeing it with my daughter. My definitive decision FANTASTIC! Brilliant on a par with a new hope. Yes plot holes and storm troopers still couldn't hit a barn door at one pace but damn it's good. Put it this way it's compatible to the originals NOT the prequels ....'nuff said.

Almost completely agree with AndyG. For me it was a bit too long, but it has some nice and epic moments, and the fact that half of the movie wasn't silly 3D prosecution but relationships and personal conflicts makes it gain points in my list... I also think that it has a strong remembrance feeling and it reminds me a lot for the original thrilogy. I really think it's a good opening to the new trilogy.

I´ve seen the movie last Friday and greatly enjoyed it. On of the things I´ve always loved about the original movies was (and is) the aesthetics, the visual style. This is also what bothered me the most about Ep. I-III, they were a severe visual break with the original films. "The force awakens" on the other hand fits the original movies perfectly in terms of style, right down to the smallest details. I also loved seeing so many of the actors from the original movies. As to the story - I like to see it as a kind of re-interpretation of the orginal story line, which is just fine with me.

A lot of historians say that history repeats once and over again.... I suppose this first it's an echo of the original trilogy, but I expect/hope the two following episodes will diverge strongly from it, now that the links had been re-established. ^^
