Maenas Painting Log and WIP

Thanks a million mates!

Time for an update!

I have been able to finish off another hero from Arcadia Quest. Now I have them all painted!!! Hooray!.... well not all, just all of the "good" side, the evil side is still missing some miniatures!

For Johan I started putting a grey basecoat over almost all of him, since he is in full armour. For the cape I used a mix of SC75 tesla blue, abyssal blue (shadows) and white (lights). On the skin I used an undeterminated (do not know the ratio, I mixed till I liked) mix of VMC sunny skin tone, SC75 pink flesh and SC75 basic flesh, also added W&N titanium white for the lightest areas and played with the other colours ratio for the other parts.

On the NMM armour... not quite happy, specially on the extended leg... on the other hand I am more convinced by the NMM on the sword, arm and shoulder pad.

Should I finish the orcs (8 of them I think) or paint the greatest villain Lord Fang, or maybe the Sisters of pain and pleasure? hahaha still lots to paint.

This latest one is looking great... love the work on the cape...

perhaps a subtle glaze of of blue between the extreme light and dark on the sword could really make the NMM pop? I am no expert at this technique though, so take this with a grain of salt, it looks great but I think it could possibly use a bit of colour in the blend?

Well I must say that I was not aware of it until I read your post. :sleepy: So I went to kickstarter and search... But since I still have my Inferno, Pets and Dragons on the painting queue I won't pledge on this. Although the miniatures look very cool and superfun and it's very tempting. MUST resist :nailbiting!: hahaha Thank you Hairster for the heads up anyway!!

Thank you, been doing some more, will share them too. Colour mixing practice is quite relaxing, although yellow pot paint flies away... xD

Thank you John, that means a lot for me. I'm very aware that they still have a lot of errors, but I am using them to improve my game in a lot of different areas, so despite that, if you or someone else notices some improvement that's very good news for me.

Also, a part from practising colour mixing, I've varnished all the heroes and some other pending minis. And yesterday continued painting the orcish commando and both spearmen, which I plan to finish, at least some of them this weekend. Will probably throw myself to the real AB practise with the spearmen.

The eyes on this miniatures are great for practicing, most of them are even bigger than the ones on busts!! So you have more room to move your brush and the pressure of a fail is a bit less, so effectively you fail less! And if you fail, you have more room to correct it too!

So here we go with the updates, I failed to accomplish my goal of finishing the beastmen, but instead I advanced the whole group of both orcs and beastmen yay!:

Front row are the ones that are more advanced.
The leftmost is that famous albino from quite a few pages back, which I have toned down quite a lot through green glazes.

Here is another exercise from Betty Edward's colour book, taking two opposite colours and mixing them from one to the other.

On the image (all sc75 colours) from top to bottom:
Black forest green SC41 to SC37 Antares Red
Boreal tree green SC42 to SC37 Antares Red
Mediterranean blue SC51 to SC39 Mars orange
Tesla blue SC52 to SC39 Mars orange

I really like the look of the chibi orcs and your painting looks great. Don't get burned out on bulk painting on us though.

Awesome work with the orcs mate, I love them!!! I had a good look and noticed they are virtually all the same sculpt, but the way you have painted them has made them all individuals... brilliant stuff!!!

oh and your colour mixing tests are pretty cool mate, takes me back to many many years ago when I used to attend a lot of painting courses and spend weeks and weeks doing these sorts of exercises. I should really look at re-visiting this stuff as I have near on forgotten most of this stuff.
One thing that has always stuck with me though, and I think could really help a lot, especially with NMM, is doing experiments with light values. Mixing grey shades from white to black on a scale e.g. 1-10 etc and introducing a specific colour to these mixes. Really helps with understanding saturation levels of colours. This theory does go a lot deeper with adjusting the introduced colour tone with the increased light value and Vice versa... this really opens your eyes to exactly how many shades can be achieved from just a single colour.
oh man now you’ve done it, just talking about this has got me intrigued again and I’m going to have to start experimenting

Yup you can tell if they are opposite, but also is a mixing exercise were you get to know the properties of your own colours.
i.e. I was not expecting to get a nice burgundy colour from mixing one of the greens with the red.
i.e.2 From the blue to orange, I got some nice dark ochres that I could use as a base for NMM cooper (I think) and maybe if I add a bit more yellow to it I would have an interesting base for gold.

Yes, it's on my to do list! it's on the book too, then I'll move to the exercise were you take a piece of cloth and copy its colours, then change them to the opposite, then changing values... and all of that. I already have chosen the cloth... but I should do first the values exercise. Lots of work coming... ^^'

Absolutely love the orcs and beastmen! The colour exercises is something that I really need to sit down and do. How do you find the Betty Edward's colour theory book?

those orcs are looking great. really nice range of tones. really inserting to look at.

its interesting to watch the colour experiments as well. I used to have the better dewars book but lost it before getting chance to work through it. so yes its great to see working through, and tour imprinting me to try some colour theory experiments out myself at some stage soon
