\'06 Demon entries

Hopefully 2006 will be the year I finally manage to make it to Games Day. I should be attending Atlanta so I have around 3 months to get started on entries.

I have already ordered this:

and wanted to ask for some different opinions. Do you think I should paint the fire like GW does, the wrong way, or should I do it like it really would be, white in the cracks and dark red and black at the tips of the fire? I personally like the look of the way they do it but then again would the judges like the creativity or look down on it as different than how they did it?

Paint the fire correctly (white in cracks, red/black at tips). If they don\'t like it, they\'re \'tarded, cuz that\'s how fire is.

It\'s unfortunate that upside-down fire looks alright in its context. When you place it next to fire that\'s correctly done, though, it becomes obvious that something is wrong.

I\'d definitely go for properly coloured fire, because maybe, just maybe the judges aren\'t ignorant gits. If they are, you shouldn\'t lose out too much, and if they are not, then you might get some extra points for being technically correct.

Do it the right way it looks better. They will judge on your painting level so as long as its better than everyone else you\'ll get in.

Paint it the right way. The judges will be looking at how well it\'s painted, not necessarily how technically correct it is. You\'ll feel better about it and it might help them subconciously.

Well, the right way wins. I guess I\'ll post some progress in the WIP \'cause I haven\'t tried that way before, hopefully it\'ll turn out well. Thanks for your opinions and that sounds good, that they judge on painting ability more than how you do it.

It\'s only when I saw the two side by side that I realised how much better the \'real\' fire looked.

Are you (without giving too much away) planning on doing anything extra to it?

It just looks like the kind of figure that will need some extra oomph in order to place.

Good Luck!

I saw this figure while cruising their site and thought it could be a dramatic piece. I especially liked the orange highlights in the wings.

IMHO, from a newbie\'s perspective, I think the dark tipped version shown was too dark and the white/lighter fade on the original naturally drew my eyes to the face and contrasted w/the relatively dark body mass. I believe that sometimes you may need to compromise on what is technically correct and what needs done to direct the viewer\'s gaze or improve the overall experience. How that plays into a competition, I have no idea since that\'s way over my head.

Well, yes and yes. I thought the same of the second pic, that there was too much black, and a dark brown (and less of it) would have been better. Painting at these scales, we do have to over-emphasise highlights and shading beyond being technically correct. Colours need to be more vibrant to catch attention too, so for a \'newbie\', that\'s not a bad observation to make!

Me and epoxy putty aren\'t very good friends, so I doubt I\'ll try to \'spiff it up\'. Thanks for the well wishing, I\'ll just have to paint him extra good.:D

@Mordac85 - You have a point. I think that is why I won\'t be putting much black on the flames; I will probably go for a more dark red to very light black at the tips. In fact the real way will have much more contrast than GW\'s because the cracks will be much brighter and the flame will have a lot more white heat and only lack contrast as the flame gets away from the body.
