Thanks all :)

It has been a freehand weekend which I don't find as enjoyable as normal mini painting. Used a image off the web as a reference, started by outlining with a technical drawing pen then painted it.
Using a fine marker is loads easier than a brush if you want a cartoon style image (as in real life things dont have black outlines all round them!)
Turned out good I think.

yeah freehand can be tricky business, just keep practising.

have to say im unsure about this 10, i dare to say judging the pictures the quality of the freehand not quite match the miniature paintjob which can be a killer (in not a good way) in competitions.
not want to bash you completely, it does have potential.

all about practise practise practis :)
...need to hurry to the bus now... gaaah

Believe me Skel ive been practicing, this is about my tenth attempt. :freaked-out:
Freehand is my Kryptonite, but I was quite proud of this one compared to the rest :rose-dead:
I might put another tree in front of it ;).

Yes, more freehand! I like the design, but I can see where skel is coming from. In my opinion it's too clean. I feel like if you dirtied it up a bit that would help. The banner could use some damage too. Maybe add some holes, make the bottom more jagged. I'm looking at this guys armor and it's all damaged and corroded. The banner just looks too pristine to me. What do you think?

I think the free hand s pretty good ten. I have to agree that it probably use some wear and tear. I also thing that there is nothing to tie it to the scale of the mini (bullet holes may help?) and at the moment the banner looks like it it is floating in front of the pole. This distracts from the quality of the banner image. Just my two cents...

Well the red skull screams jungle fighter to me! I agree you could go further with it.

I Like the battle damage idea. What about an insignia on the skulls red forehead? Like a big assault cross? You could even cheat and put a decal there. You could also add red bandana tails coming out from behind the skull.

If you had more room on the banner you could do like a barbed wire wreath or halo maybe.

I also think the skulls right eye brow looks a little weird.

Sorry, hate to pile on.

i believe, for a relatively large freehand like this more details needs to be added - to me this is a not very bad start of the freehand. for sure some iconography would help but also more cracks, color variations, interesting details, weathering... you name it. a banner like this isnt painted in two hours you know, i think i worked the one to my horrors in more than two weeks- worth it in the end!

patience young padwan ;) and be sure to figure out the battleplan before you continue, otherwise you might end up just killing time banging your head against the wall (ive been there too!)

hmm...also not sure about the banner position on the shoulder. well... he doesnt look too comfortable with it :)
ill stop harass you now :soldier:

Thanks for all the ideas everyone, the banner has been scrapped and a rethink is in operation.

Hmm, that's tough, but I have to say, I know you are very precise painter. If you can do your NMM details you can do freehand. I think you are going to have a break-through soon and be painting up Hieronymous Bosch's any day.

Don't give up that easily. Saying "I can't do it" is a quitters response and you sir are no quitter. Now get on with it.

don't give up on a banner! I would agree that as they stand now, they are a bit of a let down, BUT they are clean and neat, with more work they could be cracking. they sort of have that old school vibe to them which I totally dig.

I try to remain quiet on this front because freehand is something i have yet to take a serious stab at. What i'll add is this: Given the background of the Catachan I think you were on the right track. dagger, skull, red bandanna. Try looking at classic tattoo art as I think that would fit perfectly with the Catachan aesthetic. Obligatory ref pics:
