12 Days to Glory: A Golden Demon Log

Its that time of year again.

Summer is here, the worldwide campaign is heating up, and... here comes the Golden Demon.

I will be entering in this years US Baltimore Gamesday. I entered in 2005 in the Youngbloods category; I got first cut. I entered the Youngbloods category in 2006 and got Bronze:
http://gamesday.us.games-workshop.com/GamesDay2006/Baltimore_2006/Coverage/goldendemons/cat8_page.htm

This year, I had hoped to enter a 5-strong unit of Adeptus Custodes Terminators in the Warhammer 40K Squad category. However, I realised that my skills are NOT up to painting what I had converted. I will refine myself over the coming year to enter them in 2008.

So, instead, I will be entering a half-complete squad of Orks that I origionally converted and started painting for a custom-rules-set game of Gorkamorka. I will be using 10 Orks (from both Gorkamorka mobs) and will probably end up entering them as \"Da Boyz\". Since they are not game legal, they will probably be going in the Open Competition category.

Here is how they stand now:

Ork #3, a Big Shoota boy.

Ork #4, Slugga Boy.

Ork #10, Shoota Boy (How did I end up with so many of them?!)

Now, I seriously doubt I can place with these guys at their current level. I did not paint them to the absolute top of my skill - I meant them origionally only as very good tabletop models, going to great lengths to individually and uniquely pose each and every one. So, I will be painting large parts of many of them. The biggest thing im undecided on is the skin - It looks good at a distance, but up close, its not very blended.

So, I have - basically - 11 days to do this. Luckily, I like a challenge! :D

I\'ve reserved time out of my normal work schedule to spend about 3-5 hours a day on these guys. So, I would like you all to critique them - Nothin\'s too harsh, really, as this IS very serious competition :)

All I am regretful of is that I have slacked off most of the past year and stayed at the same skill level I was at when I placed in Youngbloods. Sure, I\'ve refined a few areas, but I have not spent anywhere near the amount of time I should have developing them. As such, I am up against the wall now after I realised that, at my current level, I had no chance of painting my Custodes to the level I wanted them.

So, while I seriously doubt I will place with them, I am mostly aiming to at least make first cut again.

Your thoughts, critiques, support, and hate mail are all welcome! (And yes, I am 16 at the time of entering this, and yes, I was 14 at the time of entering Roaric :p)

honestly i think you should start from scratch. the poses are fine but to have them in golden demon you would need to repaint all of them. the layering is much too stark and the colors are too bright. you need to build up the yellows by dirtying them up with browns and such. the greens need more of a smooth gradation to them, i doubt these will be done by the time of gd. i sincerely hope you can get them done though.

break a leg.

The problem with starting scratch is that I\'d have to assemble a whole bunch of new ones, which\'d take even more time :p

And, like I said, when I origionally painted them I was thinking \"high tabletop quality\", not \"golden demon\" ^_^

And, I was planning on re-painting several areas.

So, in all honesty, im mostly aiming for first cut.

Still, thanx for the support!

i think you misunderstood me. not all from scratch. just spray them black again and go from there. the poses are fine. :)

I\'d go with what uber said spray em up again, all i got to say is just watch the blood and gore. Less can be definatly more, make it subtle you\'ve got to have blood and gore becasue their orcs but dont over do it, it can take the eye away from detail on the model. I like the poses, orc 4 n 9 are great, 4 looks like his sayin \"you lookin at me, huh you lookin at me i don\'t see anyone else you gota be lookin at me\" sorry bit of R. De Niro moment there. Good luck with it mate hope it comes off for ya :D

Yay another (former) Youngblood! :D They look nice to me. Interesting style of painting, sort of cartoony. To be honest I don\'t think you need smoother gradations - in the US especially the judges are seeming to come round to this sort of stark style and liking it very much. Just look at the last few US Slayer Sword winners.

12 days to glory ?

:bouncy: hi nice idea u can tell someone plays a bit of dawn of war the skin is to harsh if u can\'t blend then do lots of thin layers it takes times but the end project is worth it and if you can try and do freehand notches that will get u even further and when i entered youngbloods in uk i got to finals but anyway i entered ork big mek and for the skin i used catachan green keep adding camo then add a bit of bleach bone to its and just highlight the bits that the light would catch e.g the top of nuckles , above the eyebrows and on his cheek (the cheeks on his face lol ) hoped my comment helped

Hello,

I would like to apologize for this, as, due to unexpected real-life circumstances, I was unable to attend Gamesday.

I\'ll reply to the comments in depth and post more pics of what I did paint before I got pulled off it soon.
