Interesting observations. I run into photographing issue in several predominately Islamic countries. The idea behind the issue is that traditional Islam prohibit depiction of a person in any shape or form. Paradoxically (and you pictures are the best testament to this) that in modern Islamic countries this custom is not really followed anymore - look at the wall on the first picture 
My solution for this 1) ask permission when you feel you absolutely need a person on your picture 2) use concealed camera. I had to resort to the second solution on numerous occasions in different settings, for example when I was photographing August coup in Moscow in 1991... yeah fun time it was

Admittedly, I ignored what you wrote for the most part because I was drawn to those photographs. A+++++ are you professional?
I had no idea that photography was such a taboo...well I guess it's taboo as long as they aren't making any money off of it. Good job in keeping your cool and not sparking an international event! Beautiful pictures, but knowing you were pushing your luck in taking them, even more outstanding! Take me with you next time...
That would explain a few things Skeeve, although almost every tourist was taking pics. I have an inkling that my hat and the fact I was using a 'proper' looking camera might not have helped...
@ Ainu - I'm no professional. Wouldn't say no if someone offered me a job mind! Photography is something that has been ever present in my life since about the age of six when my old man took it up as a hobby. Since then he's always had a darkroom with several enlargers and all the proper gear. He bought me an SLR when I was about 13 and taught me how to use it, passing down his lenses, filters etc when he upgraded them. He's never been a 'professional', but he judges competitions, lectures and is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, as well as being a Gold Excellence of the International Federation Of Photographic Art. I keep trying to get him to set a website up: his stuff is stunning, I shit you not! I'll try and get some off him to post here in the mean time....
