1st Sculpt

Decided to try sculpting because I\'m so fascinated by the art that many of you display here.

I would say that this is practice in general. I did not use an armature or a foil rolled ball.

It is no longer a work in progress because my 4 year old got a hold of it this morning and tried to make Spongebob!

Any tips would be great. Any links to good tutorials would be fantastic.

I might be looking into doing busts and 54mm to start.

I\'m glad you posted I just came on hoping to pick some brains as well. I just started a practice sculpt as well using super sculpey. I was wondering if anyone could tell me whether you can bake it then add details to it later? I have my basic head w/ facial features and thought I might bake that to set it and then add hair, jewelry etc later.

I like your goblin guy there too as soon as my wife brings the camera home from work I\'ll try to put up some pics of my work and if nothing else maybe we can give each other ideas

Thanks...He does seem kind of familiar.

Not sure if you can rebake after it has been baked. I guess you could sculpt the main portion with Sculpey and then use kneadatite for the finer stuff. You can also boil Sculpey. Great questions though.

Not that I am a pro, but what I plan on doing is sculpting, then making a resin cast, then adding detail and clothes etc.

I agree with uberdark, looks very fround. I like it. Im sure each sculpt will get better as you go on so this is a hell of a start!

ive read that with sculpey and fimo you can do 2 or 3 \'half bakes\' before you finish, if you want to work in stages. you just reduce the baking time for these initial stages. i think you have to keep it relatively shallow in terms of depth because if you over do the thickness it can crack!

Yep you can bake and re-bake it again, if you want to add hair and other fine details i would say use sculpey firm the grey stuff or wax. Only problem with wax is you need a wax pen and they can cost a bit. In the future use a foil core as bakeing a big peice of sculpey can take forever and remember if it comes out the oven soft let it cool as it will go hard, I once baked a piece for 5 hours thinking it was still soft untill i let it cool.
I would also say look for some books on sculpting , two i think are great to start with are by katherine dewey, her book on sculpting life like figures and her one on lifelike animals. They both give great advice on basics and advanced techniques and will help you with anything you sculpt be it a man or monster. Another thing if you get cracks in your sculpey from baking wait untill you finish all the bakeing then just use milliput to fill the gaps before molding it.
