2 new WIP - Ultramarines (sorry) and large Dragon

Someone sent me a link for the Forgeworld Fire Dragon (I hadn\'t looked in the WHF section) which got me thinking about dragons. I rummaged around in my boxes and found a PILE of old Ral Partha and Grenadier dragons -- including this rather large one (6\" x 12\") that I had done when I was about 10. So I\'m putting him together, filling in the gaps, remaking the base and starting over. Should be fun.

I had also picked up the UM Chaplain when I was looking at eBaying what became the Black Templar battleforce -- so I decided to give him a go to work on highlighting. Still a long, long way to go on him but I am pleased with my personal progress with highlighting on that scale.

Feedback, as always, welcome and appreciated.

Wow mrjustin, you\'re improving fast!

The white looks well done, so congrats on that as it is a hard colour to do well from a dark basecoat.
I really like the flesh, and the highlighting on the leaves (ohh... i know what they are but I can\'t quite remember...:redface: )

The highllighting on the blue armour is good, but I would add more highlights like the one on the collar armour. This would make it \'pop\' a little more.

Keep going at it, it\'s great so far!

Looks pretty good, but and with me there is ALWAYS a but, there is a gi-normus mouldline on the gun wich would be even more prominient if you stained the gun with a mix of 30% chaos black, 10% scorched brown and 60% water, then rehighlinght.

Looks good, neater than your other Ultra posts. Dragon needs alot of highlighting, nice mini.

I like the dragon a lot! And I think he is apalogizing for the ultramarines because almost every 40k player plays as space marines.

@OrkBoy: thanks for the kudos. I actually have highlighted to the same level as the collar - but this time I tried highlighting with an actual light source. All of the highlighting is done as though the light were just behind him and over his left shoulder. So his right leg is darker than his left, etc. Not sure about it yet and I may go with more simple highlighting.

@squig hunter: if a mould line is the worst thing you can spot so far I\'ll take it Thanks too, I actually hadn\'t noticed it but it sure does show up in that photo.

@hubbabubba: because something close to 40% of all CMON images are Ultramarines And no worries on that dragon; I am repainting him. That paintjob was done when I was about 10 years old... which is not recently.

Dragon Update 01

Wait... it\'s not red? Nope, there are enough red dragons; I probably have a dozen in the box this guy came out of.

Lots of time invested already and not a lot to show for it. I based the model in Bleached Bone and applied a washe of Vallejo Imperial Blue. I then drybrushed the model heavily in Codex Gray, then lightly in white, before doing a 4:1 blue:black wash. This will give me the basis for the bulk of the highlights. As I really get to work I\'ll come back these photos to help.

I\'m still not sure at this point if he\'ll be blue with a white belly or white with a blue belly. I\'m thinking the previous.

As with most minis I\'m starting in on his face. I have done the first round on his eyes, bone and the frills on his face. I\'ll go back over the frills with a wash, highlight the bone (4 layers and a wash on there now), and then decide on the final colouring for this guy.

Feedback is, of course, very much appreciated.

I like the colour you have used - i\'m gonna paint my wyvern blue!

I think you should go with a white or at least lighter coloured belly - it will help add a little colour variation to the model.

The highlighting of the fanned out area of the mouth looks great! Also, good start on the bone areas - that\'s how I would\'ve done it.

More work on the head - which is probably about 50% complete at this stage. I also started in on the belly scales - which is at six layers at this point although the photo didn\'t capture it well. I\'ll try another shot the next time I paint this guy.

Still having fun and it\'s nice to be painting something that\'s a much larger model and not a Space Marine.

I wonder how it would look with a white belly but with greyish tones to it. I think the blue tone makes it look too much like the back scales, but what do I know.

Also, that one spine on the back has a bit of blue on the tip and it\'s driving me nuts.

The rest of the models look great. You\'re quite the little painter!

No worries; I haven\'t gotten around to painting anything other than his face and tummy. I also plan to do a gray wash over the white scales which should blend with the blue base but help it stand out.

More as it progresses.

DRAGON UPDATE 12/7

Finally starting to make some real progress on this one. I still only consider the model about 50% complete - especially as the base is still sitting on a shelf - but the model no longer seems overwhelming.

Wings were wet blended using VGC Imperial Blue and white. Now that they\'re dry (sigh) I\'m considering going back in to bring them all the way to white at the edges.

Quite a bit of touch-up and little work to do. The base is going to be snow covered rock on a wood display stand... all before the end of the month. Oi.

And... I\'m done!

I\'ll get a Before/After pic up in my gallery at some point but I\'m thinking that this one is finally finished. Just in time too; it\'s a gift for someone I\'m seeing tomorrow.

If you look closely (bad lighting, sorry) you can also see the clear drool coming from his mouth as well. Eww!

I\'ve been up to my neck in this and a couple of commission projects - other than pulling the chappy off of his base (and breaking his leg in the process) I haven\'t touched him.

I have also re-thought the skulls on his legs and come up with a new plan for those. Going to really challenge my ability.
