Miniature Painting Competition Rules & Restrictions
Rules
1. Entries must be made in-person by the painter. Entries must be the work of the painter.
Any entry proven to be painted by anyone other than the entrant will be disqualified (See
Rule 5).
2. No more than 2 entries per painter per category.
3. We only accept Generic Tickets (2). We cannot accept cash.
4. You cannot enter previous Gen Con winning models. You cannot enter painted models
published prior to Gen Con in any professional public media, i.e. manufacturer website,
magazines, gaming material. You cannot enter winning models from any other contests
or conventions. It is our intention that painters provide entries that are previously
untested or publicly displayed.
5. Disqualified winning entries forfeit all prizes, titles, awards, and the painter is
barred from entry in future Gen Con competitions. If an entry is disqualified,
awards will be given to the next winning entry. Information dealing with an entry in
this competition that may result in disqualification, should be brought to the
attention of Competition Administration immediately.
6. All entries must be finished, including bases, within the size restrictions as noted
separately.
7. Each category must have at least four entries or we will combine it with another category,
per management decision. Final category placement of all entries is determined by
management and can be changed at any time before or during judging.
8. Entries will be photographed and entry registration indicates permission for Gen Con to
show them in all public media, including online and print media.
9. Gen Con staff, volunteers, and competition management cannot be held responsible for
damaged or lost miniatures. We treat all miniatures with respect and will do our best to
keep them safe.
10. Gen Con employees, Gen Con Competition Management, Gen Con Competition
Administration Volunteers, and Gen Con Competition Judges are not eligible for
entry.
11. All decisions of the judges and management will be final.
12. Entries must be received by 9 pm on FRIDAY of the convention.
13. Entries and Prizes must be picked up by Sunday at 3pm, or the entrant will pay
shipping and handling for their entries and prizes to be mailed to them. If we receive no
replies to our attempts to contact you by phone or email by September 30th of this year,
prizes will be forfeit and entries still in our possession will be auctioned.
Size Restrictions and Judging Categories
Please note measurements include any and all bases. We use these measurements to
determine display shelf placements and they will be strictly adhered to within reason.

o Size restriction: 3x3x3 inches.

o Defined: Smaller figure or animal-mounted figure such as a knight on a horse
which fall within the size restriction.
o Judging: Quality/Artistry of Painting
„FƒnUnit
o Size Restriction: Units must include unifying base/board/simple movement
tray for ease of movement within the display cases, entry max of 10x10x10
inches.
o Defined: Models in military ranks or groups of figures that constitute a unit, squad,
or team of individuals or adventure group.
o Judging: Presentation of Unit Cohesion, Quality/Artistry of Painting
„FƒnMachines of War
o Size Restriction: 12x12x12 inches. Multiple free standing figures (as in a
crewman) must include unifying base/board/simple movement tray for ease
of movement within the display cases.
o Defined: All vehicles and crew-attended weaponry. This includes all tanks,
motorcycles, ships, siege engines, all weaponry that contains or is run by one or
more crew.
o Judging: Quality/Artistry of Painting

o Size Restriction: 14x14x14 inches.
o Defined: Emphasis is on the display as a focused scene telling a story with figures.
This may include battle scenes or other dioramic displays.
o Judging: Presentation of a Story, Quality/Artistry of Painting
„FƒnLarge Figure
o Size Restriction: 14x14x14.
o Defined: Single Figures that are larger than Single Figure restrictions. Large
Monsters, Dragons, Statues, Busts, etc.
o Judging: Quality/Artistry of Painting.
Gen Con Indy 2006 Competition Judging
It is not easy being a judge, and the artistic development of the hobby has made the job even
tougher. All judges are experienced and award-winning painters. Judges and Competition staff
are not allowed to enter the competition. We pride ourselves on our integrity and devotion to the
hobby of miniature painting.
Process: Judges divide into 2 teams. We divide categories between them and each team goes
through their shelves for the first pass. The first team for a category narrows down the
possibilities to around 10 entries per category. This is not a hard rule and, at its own discretion,
a team may narrow it down to a greater or lesser number. These are the Runners Up--those
judged to have the best chance of making it to the winners circle. Judges shuffle miniatures from
the front to the back of the case until they¡¦ve narrowed it down as closely as they can, using
debate and discussion, voting, and careful study of the entries. The second team studies these
Runners Up and determines final placement of the winners.

In general, judges are looking for obvious painting and modeling flaws and successes. What
looks great from far away and still shows good quality close-up? We study them for highlighting,
color choices, design work, and overall quality of technique. When there are differences of
opinion, judges discuss. Majority vote will decide the issue if there is no other way to settle it. At
any time, a team may request the assistance of the other team. At any time, a team may
request other miniatures be brought out of the case for consideration. At any time, a judge may
move an entry to be judged in another category.
