2010 Games Day

I don't think it'll impact GW much. Might save them some money, and I don't know that Games Day's did that much for bottom line kind of stuff for the hobby. In order to set foot in a GD you probably had to be more than just a mildly interested fan anyway.

I personally am a little dissapointed in the loss of GD Canada. Having said that I didn't attend once in the last ten years or so, even when I had the opportunity to have a free hotel and stuff when I was a GW Grey Knight volunteer. I would've like to try competing at some point in the next couple years. Since I didn't support those days it's hard for me to complain about it's removal from the schedule.

Oh well. Doesn't really affect my life one bit, but I would have liked to go down to Toronto. Maybe I'll have to give Baltimore a go. The one day thing isn't that great though. Bring on World Expo 2011!

Doubt it'll affect them at all, really.

I mean, how many people show up to a Games Day that don't already know about Warhammer or 40K? Anything they sold at the GD went towards paying off the cost of holding it before any profit. In fact, I think the reason for cutting GD Atlanta was because it wasn't covering costs (no idea how true that is).

Not a surprise. Lamentable, because if there was one within easy drive, I'd probably go.

Looks like the rumors are true. One Gamesday in Baltimore for the US.

25 bucks per ticket and you have to per order, no tickets at the door, but just one day? Isn't the European days a weekend?

Wonder how this will work out for GW?

A. Theirs a thread already in the conventions section on Baltimore GD.

B. Tickets for most of the European GD are 25+ pounds or Euros, you have to pre order and there is no tickets available at the door usually as the events sell out a head of time.

C. All European GD are one day and they are usually held on Sundays.

So in all honesty they are following company protocol on Games Days.

As someone living in Toronto, this is lame.

As for looking at the bigger picture, well done GW. Have a good feeling that this will bring a uniqueness to the North American GD experience and allow GW to concentrate on making it BETTER.

Not actually accurate for the UK.
For the last few years Gamesday tickets have been available at the door. Whether this is due to poor customer take up or bad publicity hard to say.
Of course it couldn't be at all due to being over priced:lying:

But don't forget the UK venue (Birmingham National Exhibition Centre) can hold up to 10,000 persons and often comes close to that on Gamesday.

Exactly, the event was good until I experienced PAX, which had me really wishing GW could consolidate the events again and make them more unique/special. Good guests, tight competition in the Demons, and exclusive information/sneak peeks/etc. are extremely hard to do if you have an event every few weeks during "Games Day Season".

Just out of curiosity, exactly how many Games Day events were they running until recently?

UK, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Poland, Canada, Baltimore, Chicago, LA, and they already canned Atlanta. Was that all of them?

Anyway I'm currently in the process of harassing regional and area managers about the possibility of a GD Las Vegas. I have no reason to believe it's been considered before, but I think it would be just about perfect in terms of cost of flights, hotels, and simply having something else to do worth justifying the trip. Sorry Baltimore, but what else am I going to do there? I don't like the Ravens :p

It really isn't that hard to make it better.

The biggest complaints I saw was that there was nothing new to show. They aren't showing upcoming works/armybooks, etc...so really...for anyone who doesn't want to spend the day playing with screaming kids, either you go for golden demon, or don't bother at all.

I see no need to go except for the contest, as everything else (play some games) I can do anyways elsewhere...

There are some unique games, but those mainly cater to the younger crowd from what I have seen...

lame in my opinion. america is huge and very much the size of europe. yet they dont have just one golden demon in europe. they have multiple ones. going all the way to baltimore for one day and paying for the ticket to go halfway across the country to possibly walk away with one golden demon and the chance to stand in front of a 20 foot tall inflatable space marine? sorry not gonna happen for me. the lure of multiple places in the u.s. was that each place was close enough for most americans to get to in a car ride or a short plain ride. now its all at one place. if i was going to put it anywhere, chicago would be my choice. right smack dab in the middle. but you know GW, 10 greatswords for $50 was a great idea too. lol

Perhaps a good opportunity to realise that there're other fishes in the pond? There are other miniature competitions besides GD. A lot of game conventions have miniature painting competitions. ReaperCon has started using the open judging system and, if I understan things correctly, allow all manufacturers. There's a quite good yearly historical model show in Chicago. I wouldn't be surprised if they, like most European historical model shows, have fantasy classes nowadays.

Well its pretty simple, They can't keep putting on events and loose money..

Having it in Baltimore allows them to have the best event for the least expenses. Hey at least they didn't cancel them all.. they could of done that.

The Chicago MMSI show has always allowed Non historical entries like Fantasy and Sci-fi and encouraged it.

Gen Con Has 2 contests actually, There the Gen Con painting contest and Privateer Press runs their own in their booth.

You have Adepticons Painting contest in Chicago In March.

hehe

i think the main reason the GW contests are the most sought after is that as people get better, and can challenge for the best overall prize, compared to other contests, GW has the best prize ( a sword!) hehe

Although, from what I see in the entries, it would appear winning Euromillitaire, Ravage, or World Expo (gold medal), is an even harder feat (not that GDs aren't hard enough!!!)

Id say that $1000 cash prize for Privateer Presses contest trumps just about anything.

Saying that, Id like Make Euro once and being next year is the 25th Anniversary I think..might be a good time to try and go.

When it comes down to it, we go to events for many reasons.. for some its to win an award, to others its to play games.. For me I like the social aspect of it as much as the competition..To be honest I could care less about knowing whats the next army book or seeing 6 months worth of releases..I will see them eventually and I like the monthly surprise of whats coming out new. I know GW found out that by showing to much inadvance, people actually loose interest in it when its finally released..its "Old news" in a way..

It's been mentioned that Poland was already gone, but they'd already killed the Los Angeles GD last year, too -- I was finally going to go for once, and that was the year they removed it. :confused2:

Oh well, my wife's best friend moved her family to northern Virginia, just over an hour outside Baltimore, earlier this year. With that incentive, I'd already just about had her talked into going to Baltimore next year. Of course, we were assuming that would be in May, as the Baltimore GD had been in recent years, so the push back to August is a wrench in the works... but I still think I might be able to swing it.
