Very good work, I would have made the two reds slightly different (the armor / skin tones) to separate the rider from the beast.

The weathering on the beast looks great and TBH I would be hard pressed to say how you could actually improve on that. As 10 Ball states the rider and beast could have been done slightly differently to make a difference.
For me the base is a bit too plain. Don't get me wrong its nicely constructed and well painted and fits the figure but.... I don't know, it just seems a little too drab. Maybe could benefit from a bit more verticallity ( that even a word?) in the form of spikes or spears jutting out from the ground.

Still you got second place in that catagory which is a major achievement. Generally the difference between the top 3 is so minimal that a different set of judges could place them in a different order, it just comes down to that particular day. Well done and good luck for next year.

Well it doesn't quite show it on the mini, but I was discussing the mini with the painting judges and one of them mentioned how he loved that the models faded into each other....but I see what you mean by having them slightly different colors. But other than that, I didn't think it was such a big deal having them somewhat similar colors.

I did want to put more on the base, but just ran out of time before having to enter the mini. I'm still working on getting better at basing as I've only really worked on improving my painting of the minis, not basing.

Quick question though, is the mini really deserving of only a 7.7??? Your thoughts and comments....

That's alot of red!

I think it is very very well painted, but overall lacks a bit of eye grabbing interest because of the simple amount of red.

Certainly worth more than it's current vote score, but I wouldn't put much stock in that. The voting here is fickle at best.

Quick answer, Yes.............to me.

Expanding on my answer, this is not something that "grabs my eye" either as a model or via the photograph.
So I would tend to categorise this (mentally) as "Yeah OK" and move on.
Peoples reaction within the galleries isn't the same as the gamesday judges and as a consequence personal likes and dislikes of a miniature (or company) are more transparent through the voting.
Also you have to consider that Gamesday winners are not all automatically going to hit a 9 or above.
The "voting audience" here aren't limited in taste to a one manufacturer competition nor are all of them discerning painters (or active in the forums) there are fanboys, rules monkeys and whatnot out there who will look and go "I hate Khorne" and hit you down due to that bias.

In the end You Got a Silver Deamon, don't worry about a score on an internet site.

Basic answer is yes... as I have seen some of the better pics that you have put on the forums that show more of the detail. The pics on the voting page are not great.... they are a bit small to see all of the fine detail that you have added on the model, and the plain white background is not ideal either. That said as DR says .. you did get a Silver demon. What people will rate highly on here is not necessarily what the GD judges are looking for. From personal experience at the last UK GD I had 4 entries where I had posted pics of them before I went. The highest rating figure.. I think it was 9.0 at the time... did not make the first cut, whereas the lowest ranked ..7.9 or there abouts got me a bronze in the large scale catagory. So if you like painting GW stuff and you want to paint to win at GD competitions then carry on the way you are already doing. Take on board the comments you have received here which may help in the future. Sure it's nice to get high marks on here.. but that's nothing compared to being able to get up on stage and receive a Demon trophy.

Just to clarify the basic answer is no... IMHO it should be higher. I seem to be having problems editing previous posts, as in the system is not letting me save my edits, hence the double entry.

Thanks for the relpies (or multiple yes and no replies :p) everyone. I just thought I'd ask since I thought it would have scored a bit higher. But it doesn't bother me as much since I can wave a silver demon around. The pic was actually taken from the GW site also...so I might take some better pics and post it up to see the difference in scores from a OK photo to a pretty decent photo.

Thanks again everyone for your insight and hopefully I can bring in a gold next year.

Yeah, I really think you have the skill to win Gold. Now, just figure out a way to wow those judges!!

Good luck!!

It is great work and instead of asking why did you get only silver ask why did the other guy get gold? At times it may be a stupid as the judges see tons of the model you did and few of the gold winners, or the addition of some free hand work. Then again it could be because the gold winner is a space marine. If I had to be super picky to find a reason to take off points I would say that the chain being broken on the mount with a rider on it is good but the chain is fastened to the ground so near the beast on the base. I think leaving the chain attached but dragging on the ground or wrapped up to were the rider is still holding it may have shown a better story.

This is some of the best weathering and eroded red paint I've seen in a while. And definitely surpasses anything I can accomplish thus far, so take my critiques with a grain of salt.

First of all, the mini works because it cuts a striking silhouete. With such low contrast between your choice of colors, the It's the silhouette that does more of the heavy lifting, attracting the eyes to the perimeter first. Only then do viewers' eyes get drawn into the interior, and then the salivation begins ;c) Because this paint job breaks tradition from painters who use much stronger contrast and flashier NMM to wow judges, it's kind of a high-concept piece. For example, look at some of the better rated landraiders and tanks on this sight. Those painters have found some excuse to paint extreme tone and value contrasts even on something as uniform as a giant box of steel.

So the the question is, how suitable was your concept to a GD contest, and does it suit the judges' tastes?

You know Joe Orteza once told me the only difference between bronze and gold is judges personal decisions. It's a great model overall, personally the ridges body seems a little dull compared too the rest of the model but it was a well deserved demon so grats :).
