220mm Skeleton Warrior Robe

Hi Guys and Girls

Im preparing to paint a 220mm Skeleton warrior of which im going to eventually use as a Bone Giant in a Tomb Kings army im working on and the majority of the torso and legs are covered in a robe. Im looking for the robe to be black but everytime i try painting a black robe it looks cr@p.

If i undercoat it Chaos Black, how should i highlight it? using Codex Grey and Fortress? Any tips or examples of a black robe would be sweet.

Thanks very much everyone

On 220mm you\'ll have to get the blending right, more highlight layers than usual to get it as smooth as possible. With black you also want the majority of the robe to remain black, using harsh highlights on the most raised areas, unlike other colours where you\'d start from a dark shade and blend upwards over larger areas of the robe.

If it were me my colours of choice would be Black->Shadow Grey->Space Wolves Grey, obviously blending many graduations between each, and maybe not all the way up to space wolves grey - depends on your taste really. These colours give you a bluish tone to the black which I find quite nice.

Another option I would consider is mixing bleached bone to the black for the highlights, a tiny bit at a time as BB is so far away from black. This gives a more natural colouring.

I like the bleached bone idea. I dont have Shadow grey, only Codex and Fortress and SWG.

Now blending is something i have very little experience with. When I say little, i mean none :D

on that scale mate you want to wet blend.

layering will take you forever.
you can then use contrasting washes within the shadows to add extra depth as well as character.
