28mm = 1/35 or 1/48 scale ?

I\'m looking to get some bits from model tank kits to enhance my guard tanks.

I\'ve brought a few 1/35 and 1/48 kits but the sizing doesnt seem quite right, does anyone know roughly what GW scale equates to in the model world ?

Thanks

the 1/48 stuff seems a little small, but this could be because GW oversized the items on the tank accessory sprue.

Against a character model (guardsman) they look ok, but seem a little small on the leman russ.

it\'s the whole scale versus size question that will never be cleared up until you get them and try .... I find 1:48 in general is nearer but on some pieces 1:35 and others eve down to ridculously tiny HOO scales.. It\'s all down to the right piece for the right job...

I’ve been thinkin’ about the same thing..OK lets do some math.

Suppose (just suppose) that a normal human height is 1800mm (1,80m) and a 28mm miniature is…well…28mm, we have:
28/1800 lets divide now both numbers with 28: 1/64 more or less.

Of course the sculpts rarely are proporcional but…that’s life

Einon is about right. 28mm = 1/65, 25mm = 1/72. The problem with these exact conversions is that GW oversizes everything (the so-called 28mm \"heroic\" scale), so no matter what you do things are going to look a little strange. This is most demonstrable by matching gun barrel sizes. Compare a GW tank\'s main gun barrel with some WWII tank like a Tiger or Sherman; you\'ll notice the barrels are grossly oversized in 28mm scale. Forgeworld stuff is actually scaled a bit more rationally, most noticeable in the Elysians and Death Korps. You should be able to find some 1/65 scale stuff out there; not a whole lot, but some.

then there is the problem of where to measure.

Some manufacturers measure to the eyes (for some ungodly unknown reason) while the rest of the world measures to the top of the head.

then there is the base. All you minis are based so they walk around on these foot tall platforms. Yea, that is realistic.

This should help:
http://www.prophet-miniatures.com/New/tutorials/scaleguide/Scaleguideweb.jpg

Assuming an average height, a 28mm tall figure (at the top of the head) is 1/63 scale. A 28mm tall figure measured to the eyes, should give a total height of 30mm, which is 1/58. GW figures are at least two to three times as wide as actual people would be, so that can make finding a matching scale require a bit of fudging.
