What are your thoughts on 54mm scifi and fantasy figures? Should more companies make them?

So far as I know, and believe me I looked, only GW is actually making a 54mm scifi line. There are lots of different folks making 54mm historicals which could be used as various sorts of fantasy models or the basis for conversions. But would you buy models made for the fantasy market in this scale?

Which model would you want specifically, if any?

hell yes

i love the 54mm scale and if done by a company like reaper and rackham i would get killer minis at a good price specially in reapers case. id say theyd be suited towards D&D at a fair price and maybe some inquisitor type games made for a fantasy world. i love them as show case pieces also and extensive more detailed conversions. if the other companies embraced them on a really good detailed showcase level i would snap them up in a sec like reapers warlord line. i remeber seeing a fighter, a elf woman and a dwarf at about a two inch scale some ten years ago for about 6 bucks each i think. i wanted the dwarf at the time but edidnt have the money. i think when GW released =I= i was really happy to see some of my childhood memories come back in some way.

hell if reaper would make some plastic unpainted statues about mcfarlane size that would be awesome also. i have never seen statues based on such hard core various aspects of D&D and fantasy, it would truly be a eye candy treat.

i mean, small minis are great and they will never go away but tons of people here paint because they like the minis not the games, that in of itself is to give us more formats and various markets to work with bringing us all sorts of eye candy. ive always liked dreadnaughts, greater daemons etc because they are huge and lifelike. i would be stunned to see my fav characters and such reproduced in even better detail by reaper, rakham, maybe some celtos, GW. hey do you see all the killer statues forgeworld Uk is making? price is hella weak but their making statues for nearly every army now. insanly cool looking.

No, Thanks

54mm is cool to look at, but I\'ll never buy them. Uniformity of presentation is important to me, and that means I want all of my models in the same scale, with the same type of base. I might integrate some 54mm models as giants, but that\'s about it.

Also, I rather dislike judging 54mm models side by side with 28mm models. Seems a bit unfair.

But that\'s just my opinion.

Personally I can\'t get enough 54mm stuff. They are tons of fun to personalize and convert to your own personal tastes. In that scale you can simply do way more than a 28mm model would allow. Painting them is a blast as well, all that detail on the models is a lot easier to pick out with little effort.

I\'d love to see a wider range of 54mm models readily available. The GW stuff is very cool, but most of the new products haven\'t come over to North America yet, and it\'s getting annoying seeing all the new stuff coming out there when we\'re stuck with nothing new in the last 6 months :(

Have you tried any of the historical 54s Jericho?

I\'m always tempted but they run about $18 US a piece and theres so much other stuff to buy. Not that I have any money.

I see your point, Jericho, but these are the reasons that miniatures are so impressive and fun to me: they\'re so *small*! It makes one wonder, \"How on *Earth* did you manage to sculpt/paint that thing?!?\" Once the scale is doubled, it\'s still impressive, sure, but less so in my opinion.

But hey, some people obviously like it, so why not make \'em?

You do have a very solid case with your argument! Overall though, I still think Inquisitor models can be more impressive. While it probably takes a lot less technical skill to do the freehand at that size, it does lend itself to a lot more elaborate freehand work. Which is far from a bad thing if you ask me :D

And to answer Impernouncable\'s question: No I haven\'t. I\'ve been very tempted to on many occassions, but not having any local access to them, combined with not having a credit card to order online, makes them really tough to get at ;)

And on an unrelated note, why is my hoodie crusty on the sleeve... this can\'t be good ???

Irregular Miniatures

I don\'t know if anyone has seen Irregular Miniatures 54mm range. I saw an ad in Wargames Illustrated a while back showing a set of 6 orcs and a set of adventurers (halfling, dwarf, wizard & 2 elves). Anyone thinking that larger scales show the true acme of the figure sculpters art will be sadly disappointed with Irregular\'s models. Poor is not the word to describe them! Anyone who\'s seen figures made in the 60\'s by some bloke in his garden shed who thought he\'d have a go at sculpting one afternoon will have an idea of the general quality on offer here. A kid with play-doh could have made them!
