8 or 6 for the price of 5 - GW\'s Devestators

After looking to buy individual Devestators to use in my Tactical squads, I noticed that the box set of 5 states it contains 8 weapons (1 Missile Launcher, 1 Multi Melta, 2 Plasma Cannons, 2 Las Cannons & 2 Heavy Bolters).

So with a little caution I decided to buy a box and hope it comes with enough Back Packs to make all 8 as this is fantastic value compared to buying 8 individualy.

So the parcel arived today and I was eager to see if all 8 weapons could be made.

Inside the box are 3 sprues.,2 Weapon sprues and a Command Squad Legs & Torso Sprue. I\'m happy to say that there are indeed enough parts to make all 8 Weapons, not only that but the Command Squad Legs & Torso sprue has 5 standing legs and one kneeling down set of legs, so its even more value for money.

Anyone who collects Spacemarines will have an sbundance of spare Torsos knocking around ready to take advantage of the extras in the box. This might not sound like much to some, but again anyone collecting spacemarines will know that legs are the one thing GW has never realy made spares of on sprues until recently with the CSL&T sprue.

So now with one box I have enough to give 8 tactical squads their heavy weapons troopers. Excellent.

Wow. Thanks for the info. I\'m in need of this set myself so it\'s good to know that it actually has what I need. I hated the old plastic/metal devs. They were an absolute nightmare to put together and paying that much for the individual blisters felt like a kick in the balls.

Bravo GW.

GW seem to be understating the contents of their boxes lately. The Ork Boyz set states that you get ten boyz in the description but in reality you get ten complete boyz, one complete Nob, two spare torsos for the eavy weapons and more than enough spare arms. All you need are two spare sets of legs and you have thirteen models rather than ten.

At first glance some of the GW sets seem a bit pricey for the ammount of complete models advertised but if you take into account the vast number of extra parts you get it starts to approach being value for money.

There are a number of good boxed sets from GW offering tones of spare parts. One of the best that comes to mind is the Ogre Kingdons Battalion, you already save £28 from not buying them seperate but the bewildering amout of spares your left with is a converters dream.

Another is the Black Templars Assault Squad box set, one of the sprues that comes with the box is almost redundant, leaving it a sprue of spare torsos and more, not forgetting all the spares from the BT specific sprues that are not needed for the Assault Squad. Terminator Pads for a start are a huge bonus.

The good thing about those BT Assoult Squad boxes when they were first released is that independant retailers got confused with the pricing and priced them as normal Assault Squads @ £15, £12 after discount (£18rrp). I only managed to get two sets at this price though ;( and you could even sell the BT upgrade sprues on ebay for around £10 leaving you with a £2 Assault Squad lol lol

When they origionally announced the Ork boys box the description did say contained 10 models and the Nob and then later on it left out the Nob in the description yet he is indeed in there.

I really feel they are trying to give you the best value for your money with the new plastic sets.

Its one reason I held on to all my 40K ork bits from the last army as the legs and torsos are the same and work welll with all the extra new bits.

The new Burna boys/loots box set isa prime example..if you have an extra 5 legs and torsos kicking around you can build 2 full squads out of the set.

Wait one second here! Are we actuality giving GW props here? So if we drink everytime that someone bashs GW, what do we do with praise?
Coke?

To be honest i\'ve never realy understood peoples beef with GW. People complain about their plastic prices yet there are other companies out there getting praise for releasing pre painted TOYS for more cash, these boxes contain no spare parts what so ever and to me are more suited to 7 yr olds playing with Lego castles.

Ever since i\'ve gotten back in to the HOBBY after a 10 year or so break i\'ve been mightely impressed with their plastic kits and the value for money they actualy are. Take the Close Combat Terminator Squad for instance, sure it costs £25 for 5 minis but to me you do get some of the best looking minis on the market at the moment. Not only that but you get a whole set of close combat weapons as spares, that cant be a bad thing. And if your thinking that the Terminators are a bad example because of the price then consider the new scouts, they come with a huge assortment of weapon choices that leaves you with tones of spares, all for jusr £12.

I just think GW have been value for money all along, its just that these Devestators show it more than most.

GW is one of the best known and longest running mini companies in the world. For this reason it tends to come under fire for many of the same reasons companies like Microsoft do. At the end of the day you may not be entirely happy with the quality and value of the merchandise and you may disagree with their business decisions from time to time but on the whole they are pretty good. I find most people bitch about them because it\'s seen as the in thing.

Similar machinations can be had with ork lootas/burnas. As each box ca make both you generally end up with an unused sprue. Hang onto it, buy a box of boys and make more!

While I\'m all for giving GW props where due, I\'m not going to try and make excuses on their behalf when they screw up. Be that quality, pricing or the relation of quality and pricing. Selling certain character models (like Eldrad Ulthran) for the prices they do is not cool, especially if the model\'s been around since 2nd ed.
Also: what were they thinking with the blood knights? Butt ugly models, going for (in Germany) 70€ for a box of five (That\'s something around 100$/50quid)? Nobody should be surprised if they see a rise in Empire/Bretonnian Knight boxes :)
OTOH, big kudos on the new skeletons, the cart and the Grave Guards. Beautifully done! (The Wolves are crap, though ;))
