Honestly? That fur is quite well done! The only thing I see is the sudden and even cutoff where the fur ends. It seems that you would have some "strands" that hung down more than others, giving you a less even edge.

Very well done, armor! That fur is great! And this is your first attempt at it? Wow! Trystan's on the money with the edges but doggone you did a great job!

Thanks Trys and Kath! I appreciate the positive comments. They make me feel all rainbows and unicorns....ok well maybe not quite, but it does make me feel proud of it! I did put a couple of "loose strands" but since you mentioned it, I think it could use some more.
Thanks again!

Heck, you really don't need any explanations from me, you're doing great without! Seeing as you've managed that part I could just post the pics I took for you to use as reference, hang on a bit...

At the last pic I tried to demonstrate a way to "fluff up" the fur a bit through literally poking it on select places below sculpted strands.

As we all said, you've done a great job this far and I hope this helps a bit. :)

Hey Chrome, this rocks! If you expanded it just a little it would make a fantastic article. Is that balsa wood you're using? You don't have any trouble getting it off after its cured?

I was going to make a tut with those pics when armornv came asking for advice but time slipped and he started making fur before I had had the time to sit down and write one properly. And now I decided to just post them for reference since it looks like he's got the hang of it already. I'll expand it a bit later though, when real life calms down a bit. (Which it hardly ever does nowadays but still)

It's actually not balsa I'm using, it's 1mm thick plywood, awesome stuff to use, lightweight just like balsa, bendy in one direction and sturdy as hell in the other. I just cured the putty and bent the wood to pop it off afterwards. :)

Very cool! Thank you!

One last question before I venture off searching the great unknown of the interwebz. Where do you find the plywood? Rocklers? Micro-mark? Hobby shops? :D Thanks m'dear!

Chrome, thanks for the comments! I appreciate you posting the pics anyways. It was still helpful to compare how you did it vs. how I ended up doing it. My method was actually fairly similar. Would love to see an expanded tut on this. I hope you did't invest too much time and effort just to help me. I would feel pretty crappy if you did considering I asked you for help and then went off on my own. :(
I'm going to try and add a few loose strands along the bottom today. Might throw up a pic of it when done. Depends on how much of a change is really visible.
Thanks for all the positive help so far guys and gals!

I ordered it online from a Swedish Railway hobby supplier located in Stockholm, more precisely THIS store. :)

I had only invested about an hour or so worth of sculpting and curing, Fur is pretty simple once you have done it a few times and well, I'm kinda into fur clad drunktard vikings in space riding wolves so...
attempting and finding out by yourself is the absolutely best way to learn so i really don't mind at all, besides, making a small tut kinda sparked my interest in the hobby again which had dwindled quite a bit recently. :)

Thanks Marbo! Hopefully will get to painting soon. As soon as I get primer on it, I will have to go over it looking for oopsies with a fine tooth comb....er sandpaper. It should be covered in red by next weekend at the latest.

Ok, so no primer on it yet because of the heat here. I have a moisture trap on my ab but I doubt it would do very well in 98 degree temps with 111 degree heat index (heat index was 119 at 4:00 yesterday :( ) So I got to thinking about the base. All the figures I have ever painted have all had the coat in glue, dip in sand, and paint treatment for the bases. Just thought I'd ask for some ideas. I think what I want to do is, more like castle/city ruins rather than any kind of woodland type. I'm thinking stonework for the floor with maybe a half of a ruined doorway arch behind him. Maybe some pattern to to floor that incorporates a chaos-ish design as well as making the arch evil-ish?
Just thinking out loud at the moment since I can't paint. :(

Check the scale but aquarium stuff makes good material.

I also think standing guard at a gate when I see him, so the arch would be cool, or a gate...stuff like that. ;) I know, I'm not much help am I lol?

I have several of the HirstArts molds at hand. Currently looking at the ones I have for ideas. Standing guard is exactly what I was thinking. One of the reasons I was thinking castle-ish (besides having some handy molds of castle-ish stuff!)
And yes, m'dear, you are always helpful. Everyone is so far ahead of me, all I can ever muster is great job or looks good! lol Even if I saw something I don't like, I wouldn't be able to offer suggestions on how to fix it!
I will be NEEDING all the help I can get with painting. Once I get back to the minis that is. Maybe not so much on this guy as I am "planning" to approach this more like an armor model as opposed to a mini due to the overall size. That's the plan anyways! :)

Thank you armor.

So far ahead of you? I don't think so! lol! Offering ideas how to fix something is tough. Usually it comes from running into a similar problem and working your way through it. So you just have to get the hang of associating what you're seeing to your own experiences. If I sculpted some armor or something and had a problem, I bet you'd be able to say - you know, that happened to me, what I did is....

And of course, if you need help with the painting, we'll be here! Watch that Chad dude, tho, he gets snarky some times. ;)

How about him standing in front of a piece of ruined arch, with a scantly clad damsel in distress wailing for a rescuer without glowy eyes or sharp teeth?
