95th Rifles Bust Completed

Welcome aboard Monty. The soldier looks good in parts, some nice blending on the cheeks and blanket roll. The eyes are a little off though I think - not sure if it's the iris is too white, or they need defining lines around them, or the eyebrows, or a mix of all three, but they don't quite work fully.

Some good elements in it too though, and definitely things you can take onto the next one. Well done!

Welcome, Monty. Nice to see another person who likes historicals posting here!

You've got some nice shadow variation in the face. I agree with bgcdazzler, it looks like you used pure white for the 'whites' of the eye. Next time try an off white. Yes, the white should be white... but keep in mind what you're painting is the side of a sphere, not the top. If the top is pure white, the side would be an off white. The color you used for the sash around his chest would work well for that. Here's a close up of an eye I did on a figure and you can see a light grey can work just fine in the eyes.

Overall, a very nice figure. I hope to see more from you!

The whites were actually painted with vallejo 918 ivory, in real life they don't look as white as they do in the pictures not sure why that is. They were tricky to paint as it is very thin eye socket that was sculpted on the bust.

I see in your blog that you are about to start a Young miniatures piece, nice choice.
Before you put brush to figure I'd suggest you take the time to read through Bailey's thread there are some really good techniques he uses which I'm pretty sure you'll appreciate.

Seeing as you're in the UK will you be going to Salute in April or Euro-Militaire in September?

Thanks, DR.

Monty, if you wanted the abridged version of my WIP thread, you can check out my blog. I've got a step by step on how I paint faces and some posts about a young miniatures bust I started on not too long ago.

I started the blog about a year ago, but my WIP thread here has been going for 3 and 1/2 years... so there's quite a bit more info there. You're welcome to read through if you're curious and feel free to ask any questions even if they're about figures from a while ago.
