I read in The Guardian today that The Observer will have a nice free Dune DVD stuck on it. I ain\'t seen it before, but I\'m game! Free DVDs make me happy

Cheers mate, I\'ll be getting that. Dune is a top film, I can\'t believe you\'ve never seen it.
Apparently it has a lot of similarities to 40k (the immortal Emperor etc etc), but I was only about 9 when I saw it, the bits that stick in my memory are the giant worms and, for some reason, the pain/flame box.

A critic - Just some guy, nothing special about em, who gets paid to see TONS of movies and give THIER opinion.........anymore I really dont care what the critics say. They HATED The Blues Brothers. Cant remember how many times I have seen that one and laughed each time.
To cut them a little slack, I would think seeing a gazillion movies would skew my critique ability.

I just got the special edition for Christmas and it is far better than the one with Sting. It is a total of 3 DVD\'s
The movie has William Hurt is the star and it riveted the Becca Stef and I for the total of Saturday and part of Sunday . We loved it and will watch again. Very pretty scenery and people.
Read the books long ago and they are great also.

Actually 40K has alot of similarities to Dune. Dune was out a long time before 40K.

The Lynch version was fantastic - it oozed atmosphere and had some great \'pantomime\' performances from some of the baddies.
The new mini series was a souless attempt that was completely devoid of any charm or humour that once again looked completely sterile due to over reliance on CGI. :|~

I\'m sure it\'s the Lynch version as it called it a cult classic and all that jazz.
I never was massively into Sci-fi. Rarely read the stuff. Banks I like, but other stuff often passes me by. I was always a fantasy sort. I\'ve gone off that too though as all the books are crap (almost without exception) when compared to decent fiction lol In fact, the Sci-fi I\'ve read now seems better than most of the fantasy stuff if I look back. Some cool cult stuff.
Anyhow, I\'m watching it Sunday night probably. Mint!
Saw Escape from New York last night, and it was shite lol One of the worst films ever, but I couldn\'t pull myself away from the bloody thing until I\'d seen the end. The guy\'s mobile phone towards the end cracked me up - bigger than a Del Boy job! It took two hands to use it!

The origial Dune film is a classic and one that is an al time faveourite of mine. I also have the more recent mini series and though it is ok I am not as keen on that one, I have read all the Dune books and it is a very grand scale sc-fi masterpiece, I don\'t know what Frank herbert was on when he wrote it but it is a fantastic work of imagination.
I\'m not sure Frank Herbert was on when he wrote all those subsequent books, they lacked the sheer inspiration of the first.
I\'m with Spacemunkie on this one; the first film was marvelous, bloody marvelous. String was that Feyd character, and he made a fine sleeze-ball. The series was clinical and did not adhere to the book, though it had some pretty cute females in it.

Yeah. The books rules. I only read hte first four. I couldn\'t get into the fifth book.

Have to agree the book kick butt. Apart from the way the baron was portrayed at first with all his darling this and that, to horay henry for me, but that seemed to soon stop. I had only seen the film and thought it was great...until I read the book.
If you can track it down there is a 3hr version of dune on DVD(yes th eone with sting in it)
It goes alot more into the war about the thinking machines at teh beginning, but still manages to miss out big chunks of the book! I have the normal and extended version, and like both for different reasons.

I could never get into the Dune books. I just did not care for his writing style.
The Lynch movie is good, but not great, and the TV series lacked soul.

And the rest! With all the CGI stuff these days, it would be a logical next step to bring the fella\'s work onto the silvery screen. In fact, what an irony it would be to put Moving Pictures up there.
I just finished Monstrous Regiment and got my old man\'s Going Postal to read. Going to be great. Jingo would be a winner on the screen too.

I loved Monstrous Regiment! I\'m reading The Truth at the moment. I\'ve also got Going Postal and Thud to go yet. Gotta agree that there should be a films of Pratchett\'s books.
