A few minis to get back into it!

Hey all! These are my first 3 completed miniatures after a 2+ year hiatus from the hobby. The Space Marine I had initially begun work on 2 or so years ago and have just finished it now. The Hobbit was start to finish while the Uruk I had made the base for and basecoated a long time ago. I don't expect much in terms of scores but it'd be cool to get some input from the other painters on here! Thanks!

Yeah I'm going to try and work on that because I noticed that with my painting as well. Currently I'm working on some pretty low quality minis just for my brother but as soon as I get to work on my next real personal piece I'll try and make the shading and highlighting a bit more pronounced. Thanks for the input!

Solid stuff. Contrast is needed.

Thanks! And yeah I'm absolutely going to work on that for my next few minis. I'm realizing now that I never really made an effort to look into contrasting and complementary colours or to really use them on my miniatures, which I can see is somewhat of a detriment to the overall appeal of the paintjob.

what is really needed at that minis is not more contrast, but a simple concept thats called "darklining". look it up ;) it will improve your minis a lot!

The shoulder pads on the marine are excellent, you just need a final bright edge highlight at the top. In fact a final selective edge highlight on key areas, combined with some darklining would really bring him together.
For darklining, use a dark brown or other dark colour appropriate to the colours you are using (not black), it looks better. Similar to what you have done on the hobbit at the top of his trousers.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Yeah edge highlighting would definitely help on the Space Marine. That was one thing I unfortunately neglected to do. I'm definitely going to work on that in the next few minis (if they have hard edges like on the Marine). Darklining is something else I've been working on now. I tried it on the Hobbit but I don't think I made it obvious enough.
