A Game of Thrones scenario tactics

I'm having some trouble with the Game of Throne scenario.

Are experienced players only deploying objectives along the center line? It seems like any objective closer to a deployment zone becomes the automatic possession of that player, but the unit which claims it is essentially out of the fight.

It feels like if you lose the race to control the most objectives the only way to push the enemy off objectives is to leave yours.

I'm assuming it's my game inexperience but it feels like I could have 1 center objective, and assign a objective card to 2 units per side and it'd be the same game.

We have not yet strictly deployed along the center line. The reason being is that we both see the merit in gaining an objective card in the early game. It adds fun elements to the game including challenges and secret agendas (i.e., I want to take away that objective pronto from him muhahahahaaaa!). It also allows us to place devious terrain pieces on/near the objectives closest to the enemy.

Other than the above points, what I like about having objectives closer to my/his side is that it does force you to carefully decide which type of unit you want to hold an objective with and whether or not you can spare having that unit leave it in order to help out somewhere upfield (reward vs risk). As for me, I'll generally commit a heavy armor unit to the objective that is in the middle of the table and less powerful ones to the objectives on my side but it will depend on what the benefit of that object is and that in itself is what keeps it fresh, fluid and fun for me.

And have I mentioned how much I love my bowmen units in this scenario? ;-)

Playing for fun is certainly valid and I think I prefer it in general. Other times I want to be super competitive. Do you have any advice on how to be tactically competitive on this scenario?

1. Provide a high level of THREAT to units that wish to activate and move to an objective.
2. Set yourself up so that you can fully destroy a unit so that it has no chance of retaliating.
3. To the above end, soften up units with ranged units, while making sure that their target stays out of charge range of your unit.

Yes, I agree to some extent but those CORE tactics are what I build all of my on-the-spot tactics from. Without knowing your army list, it is hard to be more specific. For mine, I field two units of bowmen, one to my left flank and one to my right. They provide support to my other units that grab the closest objectives which may very well be the bowmen (ideally). I have no qualms about moving off of an objective if that unit can contribute to the full destruction of an enemy unit. I can move right back to it next turn (or possibly this turn by a variety of methods) but the loss of that enemy unit will provide me VP's even if I can't score from the objective that turn. It will also weaken my opponent.

What my other units are will depend on who/what I'm playing against and I love to mix it up. (think 'friendly games' here' since that is all I've played so far). My heavy hitters will hold back near the center objective with the goal of deterring any enemy units from taking it. I do not take it myself just yet. I have two objectives and so does my opponent most likely. My long game goal is to focus on destroying his units so as to gain VP's from those units and give me the edge for victory. I will only grab the center objective as a last resort, end game.

Since the scenario is won by a combination of objective VP's and attrition VP's, the above tactics work well for me. I may be playing Starks but I WILL NOT send a unit out to the fray unless fully supported with a high level of threat from a supporting ranged and melee unit. I'm not sure what kind of scenario tactics you are hoping for but since each game has a lot of ebb and flow and variance to it, tactics are always being reformulated as we go on. So it is my core principles that I stated above that I keep in mind when formulating on-the-spot tactics...

That's all I gots for nows :p
