A Humble WIP

Hello all Crazychester here

So this is my very first WIP thread. I am really hoping to take my painting ability to an entire new level, and I think this may be a really good way to do that. Ultimately I want to be painting at a GD level, but small steps first... :)

First up is an Ork Kommando squad. I've painted the Nob already (http://www.coolminiornot.com/311571), and now he needs a couple friends to complete the set. My vision with this group was to be dark and sneaky, using an urban camo scheme for the cloth, darker reds, and NMM. I'm also thinking of doing a scenic base to bring out the urban theme, possibly with a Space Marine statue tumbled somewhere... Anyhoo, I've done the skin of the faces of the squad, and would appreciate some feedback!

Skeletes, I took your suggestion and tried shading with purple, and I really like it! Too bad it doesn't really come through in these iPhone photos, but with some tweaking of the camera settings I think it just may.

I think your off to a great start. The skin really looks well done and makes the eyes do the "pop" that everyone looks for. The two links cass posted, Dark orky magic indeed! WAAAAAAAaaaahhhhgggg!

err
good work!

Thanks for the replies guys.
I've gone through most of that thread SkelettetS, and those Orks are incredible! I don't know how I haven't seen them around here already.
I've done some more work with the skin, washing in some purple and pushing the highlights another notch, let me know if you think it's enough or if I should keep going.

Just from looking at this picture I'm finding it hard to see the purples, and I've put veins on the outstretched arms but they aren't showing up very well either...

heh yeah cassar, i take my chances ;) joooin me at the greeeen side of the force!

thanks cchester :good: i think we have to come closer to see whats going on, closeup! its a wip after all and everything doesnt need to be perfect. from what i can see, i still think you should add mooooore highlight, especially on their faces. you know i ended up with pure white glaces at the brightest points there. anyway, keep it up!

Watch out Cassar, soon enough there will be a green army following Skels...
Did some work on the skin, then needed a break before the four guys ended up in pieces. So now they have grey onesies and look like their mothers thought it'd be cute to dress them all the same. Apparently this tactic is useful for not being seen in an urban warzone so I just go with it.

I was messing around with some photo software, so that's why there's a face in the top left corner.
General thoughts?

The eyes look like they are glowing in the dark to me, like a light shining into cats eyes in the dark. Bad. Ass. Just from that it makes me think they are sneaky gits. More please.

Lucky me, I got to spend my weekend helping my girlfriend move in to her new apartment, so no time for painting but lots of cuts, scrapes, and bruises.
So today is only a small update. Started the NMM of the hand weapons, and pushed the highlights on the skin a bit further.

I'm unsure of the sword, but I'm liking the axe so far. Both need more rusting and a bit of pure white, but otherwise I think it's a good start.
Also, I'm tinkering around with photos but can't seem to find a good size, I'd appreciate suggestions :)

Some more work on the weapons, some rust, and some reds... The end is in sight! It's terrible that I'm already planning out the next squad I want to tackle (some Slayer Pirates, since you were wondering) when this one isn't even finished yet, but that's what the ADD is all about sometimes. Oh well. It's all going to culminate in my ultimate nerd fantasy, a unit of knights outta the Game of Thrones series. One day!

As always, thoughts are appreciated.

Started working on the faces and some of the leather straps. The leather might still be too light, and could use a bit more color, but I won't know for sure until I can look at it after some rest. I was thinking that the ski masks were a little plain, so I've tried to replicate a kind of 'bikers bandana' look to it, using the lower set of teeth to make an Ork skull.

Happy so far with how things are coming out. Feel like every new project I'm getting a bit better, and especially with this squad, almost every time I grab a brush I outdo myself a little bit. Yay!

Ahh finally something finished! Although it's not an Ork, it's something. I'm pretty excited about some of the different things I got to play around with, and overall I'm pretty happy with the turnout. Please let me hear what you think :)
