A little beef...

It\'s the new guy again.
This is a small personal beef I have, and you can all disregard it completely, if you\'re so inclined. Looking at the votes given for the models on display and the like, and I\'m seeing a fair number of lower ratings on some minis that may or may not deserve the numbers given.
Now, I\'m not saying that people aren\'t entitled to their opinions. Far from it. However, we\'re not just here to love or hate other people\'s work, but to help them improve their skills. Right? So, as a fairly novice (but hopefully respectable) painter, myself, I\'m asking everyone who gives a displayed mini a lower rating to also post a comment about what\'s wrong, and maybe how to improve the piece in question.
We can\'t improve our skills if we don\'t know what we\'re doing wrong. Right?

Just my $0.02 worth.

agree with your point, but also think a lot of people who vote probably sont even come to the forums.

and there are probably some people who just post stuff on CMoN for free image hosting.

i would love to comment on everything i voted on, but i was always taught:
\"if you cant say something nice then dont say anything at all.\"

and if i vote low it is on things like #60183 where they no it is a 1 and state so in the description. but just showing off an earlier work prior to all they have learned since.

Re:

Shad,

If I ever get a camera and post here, which I am fully intending to do, I hereby give you full and open permission to nit-pick the heck out of my work.
The same goes for everyone. I\'m here to admire, to learn, and whatever gods exist willing, to teach as well.
The sentiment \'If you can\'t say anything nice, say nothing at all\' is a wonderful one, but, in dealing with critiquing my own work, I ask you to ignore it. :D

One more paycheque, and I should have a camera.

Please don\'t get me going again;)

Seriousely in an ideal world we would all comment every time we vote, but we dont and I suspect low votes will nearly always have no comments.
It seems to be the way things are.

If I commented on every mini I voted on I wouldn\'t do much voting... I comment on things when I want to give praise for something or I have quick helpful advice to give. A lot of times it is difficult to give helpful advice. Some minis are poorly painted altogether and how do you comment on that? ??? Should I say \'you need to practice a lot on everything\' or should I say something like \'maybe you could thin your paint\' as if that alone would help? I don\'t think the painter would benefit from either. In those cases I just vote and move on...

See my sig. In general I think that minis here end up with the score they deserve, but it doesn\'t gel until around 50-100 votes. Before that the score means nothing.

One thing I\'ve noticed since I\'ve been active on the forums here, is that when I\'m voting for minis and reading comments, more times than not a majority of the comments are from names I recognize from the forums. :)

That would mean posting an awful lot of comments, and it isn\'t going to happen. If any poster of minis on this site wants to improve, all they have to do is head to the articles section, post on the forums and PRACTICE!

As for the scores, minis get what they deserve I reckon, and if the poster doesn\'t like it, they can take the pics down!!

It\'ll be snipers next............:|~

I come to a different conclusion, if the poster doesn\'t like their score, don\'t take down the photos, work to post better minis!

I actually feel one of the driving factors of the site is that there is agrivation involved, it seems like one can never really be content with scores, which in turn causes people to work to improve their talent and skill to get those scores they want...and of course at that point they feel like those should have been better and so on.

Contentment is a VERY dangerous thing in the art world. The moment you\'re content with what you\'ve done, there is that much less reason to do any more. And cmon just makes sure we can never be content! :)

If I get a low score I will look at the piece closer and analyse it my self. If I dont see what\'s the problem then I will post a pic on the forum and ask for input. I did this a week or two ago and got some good responses. Things I hadn\'t thought of. You have to be a bit agressive if you want to learn. Make some noise. Few will take the time to critique given the sheer volume of mini\'s (me included).

This thread smells a bit like a \'score snipe\' whinge.

BUT, what you say is right. I would love to comment on everything, but life is too short and most of the time I leave comments on the forum when people post(except when something really gets me excited or angry).

Then everyones score is subjective not objective, that\'s art for you:rolleyes:

That\'s a good philosophy! I try to look at the galleries of those that give me comments and return the favour, so to speak! I have also received a lot of comments on my work that way. :)

I would have to agree with Klute and Ritual. I have noticed that in the last several weeks, when I have left comments on miniatures of fellow forum denziens that they have gone and done the same for me.

Scratch my back and I will scratch yours, seems to be a common idea here.

Posting your work on the forums, linking out to the CMON posting seems to be the best way of getting some proper critique.

And getting to know the forum denizens is also useful. Everyone knows they all speak a lot of sense........:D

I get fed up of people moaning about their scores. The fuss Joe Hill made about his stuff dropping .1, then taking his gallery down as if people should be grateful that it was there in the first place..... Fantastic work, but then again so is pretty much all of the work of the top 50 artists! CMON gives many the only chance they have of a wider audience for their stuff. Just wish it was appreciated a little more.....

Re: Score Snipe

Well, actually, it wasn\'t begun with any intention of score sniping. I, personally, haven\'t got any mini\'s posted to be scored, yet.
I hadn\'t checked all the forums properly, and posted without realizing that there\'s one specifically devoted to saying \'Hey, here\'s my piece... HELP!\'. (Which is really thick of me, since this is it... read first, post second. New rule for me.)
So, apologies from the new guy for not looking thoroughly enough and getting this whole thing started without full knowledge.
Ignorance is bliss.... unless it makes you look like an idiot.
As I read more, here, I learn.
But thank you, all, for your comments, as they\'ve helped me learn more about the site, at least.
