A little question here...

I recently posted my latest work(number 7189), and found out days later that it had and still has a rating of 3.6. yet, another image(number 377) has a rating of 5.2, but it is a bad picture, and looks like it was done in entirely metallic paints, and(no offense to Declan on this), it looks worse. And an even bigger blow to me, my crappy Mage Knight minis are in the mid to high 4\'s in ratings. What is so wrong with my miniature??? Is it because the eyes aren\'t done or the base isn\'t done??

To be bruttally honest...

Okay, try and take this criticism as best as you can because I\'m just going to rip this apart. But don\'t take it too hard, as many others would say \"You\'re just bad\" and think nothing of it.. so here we go: First and foremost is something I\'m seeing popping up in your pics is that you\'re not cleaning the mold lines very well.. that detracts a LOT. I suggest cleaning them off with a sharp hobby knife, of if that seems dangerous, try some small files they sell at train stores, or maybe even a nail file if it can get to the flash. Second, I don\'t know what compression your using but the scan is kinda blotchy with pixels.. which agian, detracts from the pic. I think there\'s some articles up that deal with this, but I haven\'t read them, as I use a digital camera. Now, specifcally on #7189.. it has the above things as well as some others.. first off, even though I can\'t see #377\'s big pic (it sez broken image, so I\'m looking at the thumbnail) is that the colors look more natural. It might be your personal preference, but I for one do not like the red/blue look on wood elves.. maybe if you tried the color scheme on the box, you\'d get better results. And the red doesn\'t look too well blended.. and the highlight is pinisk.. usually when you\'re doing red, you work your way up with orange. Keep in mind a good rule of thumb is that 5 is R.A.F. standard (usually) and though it does not include eyes or very small details, basing is a must for play ready minis. Well, I hope that clears up some things with you.. I know how frustrating it can be starting out, a box of plastic wood elves was one of my first things to do, along with #6731 later on.. you just have to practice. If your old figs DO infuriate you later, do like I did and chop em up into zombies...

Chrispy, I can take criticism, I just would prefer that at least one person who gives me a bad rating would at least leave a comment telling me why they gave me that so I learn what to do right. I would\'ve used orange, except I don\'t have any factory or premixed orange, and I don\'t like to use my Citadel Bad Moon Yellow for anything(never seems to do what I want it to do). So far I\'m not using them for gaming(can\'t really afford Warhammer), so that\'s why I don\'t base them yet. And one more thing, I just looked at #377, and I can\'t even tell what the sculpt is, so how can you judge whether or not the scheme looks natural???

DB, You are correct, it is frustrating to get a bad rating you don\'t understand and not get told why. Chris gave you a great bunch of creative criticism & some good advise so maybe that will help, bu also don\'t get hung up on the numbers. Focus on the figs & the fun and on a lot of the guys here (like Chris) who are alway glad to give a helpful evaluation.

my rant

I\'ve already had my rant about people not posting comments. Apparently folks think other painters have egos of fine china and a comment saying what they don\'t like would shatter that ego.
Then they vote 4 and move on.
Some how that is supposed to be less shattering?
Anyway, my other comment:
#377 is done by Declan. Do you have 2 ids?

My opinion on posts to minis..

I\'ve only been a member for appx 2 weeks, and have voted on over 1k minis. I have posted on what I find apealing about a mini, but I personally don\'t leave any criticism beause I don\'t believe I am qualified to do so. I\'ve only been really painting for 6 months and have yet to post a mini. Personally, I believe 95% of minis are at least tabletop quality, so none of my votes get below a 5. Besides, there are minis that people post that aren\'t thier work, minis from peoples kids all kinds of variables. Looking at all of the minis I have, there are only a few regulars that I see posts from. Folks like Chrispy, Deunde, and a few others. So, please don\'t be offended if you aren\'t getting crits from every vote for you mini. There are alot of folks who are just out to see whats out there. If you really are looking for crits from folks, ask for specific crits when you post the fig. I\'ve seen lots of response to figs that ask for crits.
