Basically, the problem is that I don\'t have RealPlayer anymore (system crash a while back). Tried to download it again yesterday, but their site was slow as a dog and wouldn\'t connect. It\'s simply a matter of time. BTW - I want to hear the lab story of meeting/not-meeting your wife!!! Sounds interesting!

Actually, I listen to alot of things.
I mostly listen old school punk.But it changes depending on my mood. I listen to System of a Down, Clutch, Tool, Skinny Puppy,Pig Face, thought industry, Alice Donut, Helmet... Too many to list here realy. I LOVE Slipknot and Rammstein.
I also listen to Johnny Cash too. I have noticed my painting is better when I listen to Cake or RadioHead.

Is Nina Story Canadian? When we we home in December there was a Canadian artist that looked amazingly lke her. Unfortuantely I didn\'t pay attention. i was too busy playing in the snow and taking pics of animal footprints in the snow for my students.

@ Margo - ACK! Forgot Queen! How could I do that? They got really trendy for a while here, but I still love listening to them. I also like watching old footage of their concerts. Sometimes they\'re kinda bizaare, but Freddy Mercury\'s sense of showmanship and presentation are amazing.
@ RedDawn - Ya know, I just saw a documentary on Ravel (I think that was his name) that covered his life, including when he wrote Bolero. Not recommended as feel-good material, but it would probably help most people feel better about their own lives.

Have to say, moronic US \'gangstas\' give hip hop a very bad image and the crap they spout has absolutely no relevance here in the UK (although I\'m sure it will do if kids keep listening to and seeing it). There is actually some very decent stuff out there.

the thing about the so called gangster rap is not what they say, its how they say it. you should distinguish between that.

I think I need to speak up in defense of rap, even gangster rap. First of all I will admit there is a lot of very poorly done music in this genre, however that is true for every genre, so we can\'t just define it all by those examples.
A lot of the music produced has incredibly complex and original use of rythem and instrumentation (although often electronically generated). The lyrics are often very technically perfected in their form, and the use of language is usually very inventive and expressive. And please do not say there are not a lot of vocal talent in the genre either, many of the singers/rappers are on par with anyone out there.
Now I admit that the message and theme of the music may not appeal to everyone, but I can\'t see how that makes the entire genre \"bad\". To me that is very short sighted. The music is an expression of human experiences and no less valid than any other. In fact I would argue many of the expriences and the passion behind the words are more sincerely expressed than much of the other music listed in this thread.

Whatever happened to the vibe of The Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash and The Rock Steady Crew? The music was all about partying and having a good time. NWA and Public Enemy hijacked it somewhere along the line. The sad thing is that many contemporary rappers are regurgitating the stuff/antics done twenty years ago now. And they think they\'re cutting edge

I agree, but you also have rappers like Nas who is really expressive in his music, or Missy Elliot who manage to continually push the envelope musically. And personally I find NWA and Public enemy very important, what they were saying rang true to a lot of people.
And for funny rap, just look at a Ludacris album, there is a lot of light hearted and fun songs, just in a different style now...and don\'t forget Coolio! 1234 was awesome and fun!!
