A (nearly finished?) wip

Hey people. Never tried this before, but here goes. I picked this Reaper Guardian Beast up because he really caught my imagination, and I wanted to present him as a corroded monster prowling in a kind of deserty/dead volcanoey landscape.

Just wanted to see what you clever people think, really. Is he finished? Have I missed anything? Should I change anything? The only think I think is missing now is a bit of dried grass.

Looks good to me, doesn\'t seem all that corroded though.
Personally, I\'d change the colour of the border on the base to make the rest of the piece stand out more, I\'d go for black myself.

Cheers for the comments! There *is* verdigris in the joints and rust on the steely bits, but it doesn\'t seem to have come out much in these pictures. :/

I was thinking maybe black on the base would look better, too. I shall try it out.

Edit: Also, just remembered/saw the gem thing on his head. I was going to do something sparkly with that. D\'oh!

Hi Amazon warrior: the overall look of the Guardian Beast is good but as has been said the Verdigris and Rust need to be stronger.
Try adding a little purple to the rust areas as this can sometimes shown in the colour of rust.
As for the verdigris I think it needs to be a little more emphisised and possibly larger.
Vallejo do a Verdigris Glaze which does enhance the Aged/Tarnished look.

Well, I had a go at applying some of these tips. I\'m not sure how successfully I did it tho. The trouble is that my photography (and related setup) is absolute b*****ks. He actually looks even less weathered in these pictures, despite being quite a lot more. ARRRRRRRRRRRRGH! Stupid crappy camera and fluorescent lamp. (What do they say about workmen and tools?) Anyway, \'nuff whingeing, here he is again:

@Dragonsreach: I have heard many marvelous things about the Vallejo range, in particular things like smoke and the washes, I just don\'t have any right now. :/ I did my best with a bit of GW hawk turquoise instead. Not sure I really mastered the purple thing, either. I know what you mean, rust often has purple-ish bits, just my application technique needs a bit of work. Practice makes perfect etc.

Anyway, cheers for the tips. If there are any more suggestions, I\'m all ears. Probably ones on taking pictures, I would imagine...

Well the pictures may not be technically perfect (if there is such a thing) but the effect on the aditional work you have carried out has certainly added to the feel of this mini.
It does look a lot more weatherbeaten and tarnished.


As for help with Photography, Honza did THIS Article which is a great starting point for good mini pictures. Most of my photo\'s have been taken following this method. Hope it helps.

It does? Yay! Thankyou very much! I just need to apply a modicum of dried-out grass made from string (or similar), and it can be parked in my gallery.

It has to be said, the photography is the most frustrating part for me. I\'ll check out that link when I\'m not half-asleep, tho. I was also just browsing the photography forum- there were some very useful threads about lighting. Trouble is, I only have one tiny desk lamp and no desire to buy any more at the moment, as I\'ll be moving from Japan to Australia in a couple of months. If I can\'t easily ship it home to the UK, or it\'s not essential, I\'m trying not to buy it*. When I do finally get an opportunity to put all this into practice, it\'ll be fantastic. Goodness knows when that\'ll be, however.


*Which unfortunately didn\'t stop me buying a rather funky Ral Partha dragon and a couple of Reaper blisters just the other day - ooops! \'lol\'

I know what you mean! We play Planescape on and off, and I can really imagine the party being menaced by a LN cat-construct while visiting Mechanus. Or by the crazy experiment of some berk living on the Outlands... Just seeing the looks on peoples\' faces when you put it on the table would be worth it! lol

You should try and get hold of one if you can, it\'s good fun to paint. Nice and chunky. Has to be said, Reaper make some pretty nice \"gribble\" miniatures. I recently went and bought their celestial lion and astral reavers (aka githyanki) too. At some stage, I hope I\'ll get round to painting them!

what about chips, scratches and dings? they would enhace the \"aged in the deasert\" feel. easy to do too, just add them like you would with any other color combo.

you might want to go a touch lighter in the deepest verdegrise recesses.
