A New Batch

GreenOne

I paint my thumb.
You sure moving thing around, and being productive.
Dunno in which order you made them, I'd say the top and bottom one are really a big step ahead from the others, liking the red armor. A couple of them look thrown together hastily and with thicker paint and bare metallics. the Talon one though look like it's getting there ( The metals I mean). Three solid 6 and a couple 5 to me.

Keep it up !

The top and bottom ones and the talon are the most recent ones out of the bunch the rest I did about 2 months ago after a painting hiatus.

Well the Butcher and the Wizard are the best of the bunch. They show an improvment in technique.
But your paint is still looking a little thick in places especially on the metallics and skin tones.
I'd like make a couple of suggestions for you to consider;
Firstly switch the metallics to Vallejo Airbrush Metallics, much smoother and easier to use with a far better look to the finish,
Secondly read the Article by Jen Haley http://coolminiornot.com/article/aid/55
here which will give you a great starting point to working faces. I used that methodology for a couple of figures but found it wasn't completely what I wanted, but I used it to develop the key points of how I now paint my faces/skin tones.
The two articles I did on Faces http://coolminiornot.com/article/aid/222
and http://coolminiornot.com/article/aid/223 are now a little out of date in comparison to the way I work now, but might help as well.

agreed on both points

also i think you need to work with your washes on the metallics more. try adding a small wash to the metals, trying not to let it pool too much. then you can go back and add more depth to the shadows when that has dried. you can also try using some different colour inks to break up the metal colour

i would also say you need to break up your bases a little more

Thanks so far guys. Yeah I really do need to work on the bases. I am awaiting some static grass so that I can work on all the bases in these pics. Working with all I have right know which isn't much. The wizard and The Butcher are pieces I painted at work on saturday everything else is at least a month old. Also are the pictures know up to par or do I need to do some more work on them?

fair enough but i would try using finer sand and maybe varying the colour on the base. you could also use some putty to break up the flatness or add some texture. maybe add some bits to the base (random crap from models or stones). all this is pretty simple but makes quite a difference and can really help break it up. like your butcher. very simple, just some snow in the middle, but it works

i think i see some progress here! :) like others i also like the butcher and wizard the most, they are easily at higher standard than your previous stuff :good:
as for the metals i can only second freak, some more colorvariation would hot it up to the next level. also about the base, remember "face and base" should be the focus on the mini (im trying to remember that myself...)

also, seems like you put yourself together and got some at least decent photos! ;)

Hi Devon, well that's a vast improvement in your photos, congrats :good: it must have been frustrating getting to this point but well worth the effort I reckon :) Obligatory pickiness would be to say you should redo your NS logo so that it looks smooth rather than distractingly jaggy and to keep it a few mm from your mini (I'm looking at Ezren Iconic Human Wizard now & it's too close to his hand).

Given the speed of improvement you're showing at the moment I won't worry about suggestions, although the advice above is all good, I assume for a while at least each piece will be a jump up on the last. Most of the ones I've just voted on seem to sit in the 5 point something range but clear photos & neat multiple view montages (and being a forum presence) will garner a 6 from me :) I think The Butcher best shows what you can do now, just wait 'till this time next year, I'm sure he'll make you cringe :D ;)

Keep it up, cheers, B.

From my point of view I think you have to work at them slightly.
At the moment you are holding/placing the camera at an angle above the mini so that the Apparent Depth of Field of Focus and the Plane of Focus is cutting through the mini like so:-
/

What you need to do is arrange things so that the Centre of the Camera lens is central to the mini and that the Camera Back and the Mini are as parallel as possible. Like So.

Camera..........Mini
l0----------------l

That way the Depth of Field will encompass more of the mini. You can then work on getting illumination "right".

well, were in agreement the, the butcher and the wizard....

take a little more time on skin, and faces, always. people scrutinize those areas, and because we all have skin and faces, we are all very adept at pointing out flaws in them. a few exta layers for depth and some more time, and you'll kick it up another notch.
