[Drake Farstrider]

Hey everybody, I just put up my version of Reaper\'s Thorgram Grimsteel Dwarf King. Any comments, suggestions, help, would be great. I tried several different techniques for doing metalic metals on this one.

On the Blue Steel parts I based with Reaper Truesilver washed it with a light blue ink and highlighted with Reaper Truesilver. On the steel parts I was wanting a blue shine mithral feel.

On the Gold parts I based with Reaper Dragon Gold, washed with Reaper Ruby Red Ink and Highlighted with Reaper Bright Gold. On the Gold I was going for a red gold feel.

good job, you show a lot of brush control and pay attention to the details

but IMO the overall look of this mini is too \"drybrushed\" to get a high score. On the feathers and the cloak, try working with washes instead drybrushing to create a smoother feel, or try painting with thinned paint instead of drybrushing (at least that\'s what I think you did). I also think the metal parts (especially the gold armour) needs more ink washes, because it looks a bit flat now.

I haven\'t experimented with metallic metals in a long time, but here goes...
I was thinking that ruby red wash may not have gone dark enough in certain areas. To counter that, maybe try a little GW Scorched Brown or some other really dark, warm color, deep down in the crevasses, and then apply the ruby red wash over that. It might add a bit more contrast. Since I\'ve never tried this, I have no idea if it would work. Just trying to think what would give it a bit more contrast to provide that extra \'pop\'
The gem in his crown looks really good, and the bearskin too. I especially like the claws.

@ corvus - Thanks for looking and leaving a comment here. On the cloak and the feather\'s I used the wetbrush technique.

@ Celtthulhu - Thanks for the comment. I will have to try adding a brown wash to the gold. I was so not wanting to paint that gem. It was the last thing that I did on this.

Looks pretty good, 7.5 from me. Really like the gem, blue armour (with the pearl coming through), bear skin, and eagle.

IMHO, the hair and skin could use some more care. The wings on the helmet just take such a sharp blend from two different colors for me. And the axe is two dark to really tell, but it looks pretty nice. Base is good too.

But i\'m not a real great painter... so i\'m not a lot of help. Still a great paint job.

I like the mini but as mentioned I think the metals need more work.
The gold is ok but try washing it with very dilute mixes of scorced brown/chaos black and let each wash dry befor you apply another. This will take a few coverings before you see a big difference but it is worth it.
Then you can re highlight by adding a little silver to the gold but add it sparingly as silver is very overpowering.
It is a good mini none the less.

@ Itchy - Thanks for the vote. The skin and the hair look much better in real life. The feathers were started out brown and then I added some yellow to the mix and worked it up from there. I think the problem that I ran into with them was that I over highlighted the feathers.

@ Tidoco - Thanks for looking and the comment. I have always been a little weary of highlighting gold with silver, but I may have to give it a try.

Please more comments on how to improve my efforts.

Actually, rather than doing a brown wash, maybe thin the paint a bit less and take a liner brush, a 10/0 size, and draw lines in the crevices of the scale mail (or whatever mail it is ), and then do the ruby wash over that, or if you want it to be less glossy, in lieu of ink, water down some blood red or similar red and wash with that instead.

...nice figure! I agree with Celthulu about the heavy lining on the gold,it\'ll give clearer definition.I\'d advise playing with putting colours in gold,this I can attest to as being great fun I love all the shades you can get! My favourite is maroon or red for a shade colour then I use straight gold for highlights.I like the overall feel of the figure,the base goes a long way to adding to the natural colours used.Nice one
