A primer on primers?

What do you use? What do you hate? What tips do you have?

I've been using Armory white primer on most of my stuff, I used to love black but it seems like all my cans of armory black come out fuzzy and I'm tired of stripping minis with pine sol.

I had this same problem with Armory. I live in a very humid area so thought it was due to that.

I did a lot of testing with Krylon, Rustoleum, Duplicolor (I use Duplicolor for special projects - I don't recommend it for minis), and the best luck I've had was with Tamiya. So I switched but Tamiya is now MIA. I think it was a label/warning/safety issue. The vendor's I've been in email contact expect it back in a few months. I'm now using Vallejo spray primer it works very nicely - almost as good as Tamiya but it can run a bit easier. It comes in a larger can and isn't as expensive as Tamiya, so I may stick with it even if Tamiya comes back.

Thanks for the link. I've been using Vallejo Model color for my work, for some reason I hadn't even thought to look to see if they put out a spray primer.

hehehe...I hear ya. If you get it, do some tests with it first because it sprays totally different from Armory. I like it a lot because it's very light. But whenever I apply primer I always put on a few light coats rather than one or two heavy.

What do you use?

Spraycan auto primer mostly. Do some brush-priming for small areas using a multi-surface acrylic.

Warm can? Shake for the full recommended time? Test-spray before you use it on the current mini(s)? Spraying light coats to build coverage or trying to get it in one go?

Too much texture in the primer coat is usually down to a technique problem (user error) rather than a fault in the primer.

What tips do you have?

I don't use a primer. I just do a Grey undercoat. Never had any problems - seems plenty durable, despite the fact that I don't seal my minis, and I often game with them.

Some of those spray coats are pretty tough. I will say though that Enion's suggestion of Auto primer is a great one. I just made that switch last month and I've been impressed.

Good possibility I just find it odd that I only seem to have that problem with the black cans, frustrating to no end. although it has made me step back and start test spraying like you suggested. Too many minis turned into black flocked christmas trees lol.

And I had the same exactly problem with it...and yes, it was black. So we both had the same user error? Well, at least mine was cured when I went to another brand.

But no matter what, test spraying is a must, I do it with primer and sealer.
