pic manipulating

i would really like to see a pic of a figure that has been manipulated by a photo editor and a pic of the same figure not being manipulated (other than white color balancing). I read back about what Lurch said on how you can\'t see the brush stroke in person but the pic on camera sticks out. so i would like to see a 9+ figure pic and a 6+ pic using the same figure. :)

I don\'t have photoshop. I have some freeware thing that allows me to cut and paste and the photo imager inherent in windows so I have no idea what can be done with photoshop. I have seen some of the things Lurch is talking about and I believe him. One key is the depth seems to disappear with smoothing the colors making it \"like an illustration.\" I too would like to see a side by side comparison with the same mini, once using nothing but gamma correction and once using every tool available to a master photo-manipulator. It would be most educational on this hot topic.

i have to say i\'m with frenchkid on this one. nothing should detract from the joy we get from painting from the models. as for those who use photoshop/equivalent and fool us - so what - gives hamfisted buggers like me something to live up to. i have to try and work to standards. in the end, they are only cheating themselves

so everyone - remember everyone - breathe!!

oidoki, I didn\'t even read most of these posts(so forgive me that I\'m repeating some stuff).... it seems, that you will have to conform to american/french artistis sensibillities....which I think is non-sence. To vote on a mini fairly, you should include skill, colour choice, but also the artist\'s view....I believe sometimes the \'anal\' way of figure painting gets the high-vote, even if the more atmospheric would win the day...I prefer real metals, but respect SENMM\'s. Even though, I like to look at a model that has proper metals painted on it than NMM\'s, just because it\'s harder....and more real... chastize me if you will, it\'s my opinion...

I do agree, but....

I think you are right Tammy, but I am not sure about the deferring to American/French taste bit. There are a few of us in the forums who debate things like MM, NMM, SENMM etc at length. There are only a few however. I would guess that the vast majority who vote on the miniatures never bother to check out the forums. I think therefore they give a much wider spread of opinion. You can see that from some of the strange comments.

I also think that YOUR answer, answers the original question ie, \'what do I have to do to get an 8?\' Answer: paint like a Heavy Metal or Rackham artist. If you are not prepared to do that, they perhaps the highest accolades are beyond your reach, unless you can come up with something truly original. (I use \'you\' and \'your\' in the general sense. I am well aware of your own talent).

I think where you and I agree strongly is in the idea that as an artist you should try and realise your vision, not corrupt it for points or prizes. But isn\'t that the eternal dilemma? Did Michaelangelo want to paint that darned roof? I don\'t think so. Perhaps we need to differentiate between competitive painting and painting for pleasure? And,, If we paint for pleasure we probably wont get 8\'s:bouncy:
